The History of Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea, has to be one of the most quintessential English customs, even though the custom of drinking tea originated in the third millennium BC in China. It was made a popular tradition in England during the reign of King Charles II in the 1660’s and his wife Catherine de Braganza. Although it took until the mid-19^th century to become conceptualised!

In England Afternoon tea was introduced by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna in 1840 at Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire as she would often become hungry around four in the afternoon. The Duchess would request her kitchen staff to prepare a tray of bread, butter (the idea of adding a filling between the bread was introduced by the Earl of Sandwich) and cakes in the afternoon. This then became somewhat of a daily occurrence when the Duchess started to invite her friends to join her.

In the 1860’s upper class and society women would dress in beautiful gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea, usually taken in the drawing room between four and five o’clock in the afternoon.

The traditional afternoon tea would include dainty sandwiches with their crusts cut-off, one would always include thinly sliced cucumber, scones would be served with clotted cream and preserves together with cakes and pastries. Traditionally tea grown in India or Sri Lanka would be warmed in silver tea pots and poured into delicate bone china cups.

What does an Afternoon Tea consist of?

The most traditional afternoon tea you’ll find in England and in Leicestershire is made up of a three tier stand, laid with fresh savouries (quiche, pastries, cheese scones) and fresh finger sandwiches (crusts cut) on the bottom layer, freshly based plain, fruit with jam and clotted cream on the middle layer and the top later will have a selection of patisserie items like pastries, gateaux, fondant fancies, eclairs or other such sweet treats.

A traditional afternoon tea will also have a selection of loose-leaf teas but many establishments cater for coffee drinkers as well as soft drinks.

Guests can opt to have afternoon tea with a glass of Prosecco (Sparkling Afternoon Tea) or with a flute of Champagne (Champagne Afternoon Tea). 

Many of the venues we’ve included in this guide will also do a smaller version of the full size afternoon tea spread called a cream tea.

What Makes a Great Afternoon Tea?

There are many places that can put on an  afternoon but occasionally this can include bought items that have been dressed up. If you’re headed to your first afternoon tea experience we’d encourage you to ask if they use locally sourced produce, if the cakes are homemade, whether their menus change seasonally, what tea selections they have, do they cater for different diets such as vegetarian, vegan or gluten free.

The whole experience is further elevated with attentive service and good value for money that reflects the food, atmosphere and surroundings.

What’s the Difference Between High Tea & Afternoon Tea?

High tea is not really such a fancy affair like afternoon tea and includes more substantial fare as well as breads and desserts. It’s eaten in the early evening and can be referred to as more of a supper. You would also sit at a high table such as a dining table to enjoy a High Tea. Afternoon tea or ‘low tea’ is traditionally eaten at a low table, like a coffee table.

Afternoon tea in England is famously linked to the Palm Court of the Ritz or the Promenade at The Dorchester, which we have enjoyed, however there are many alternatives and twists of the classic, which you will see throughout article below 

The Cream & Jam Debate on Scones

If you live in England, you’ll know about the time old debate of whether the cream goes on first then the jam. In Devon, they always go for the clotted cream first then the jam but in the neighbouring county of Cornwall it’s the opposite!! Devon is rather famous for it’s cream teas where you are traditionally served a pot of tea, with a scone, clotted cream and jam and of course the cream goes on first as mentioned previously. Personally we think it’s whatever you prefer but with family in Devon, we’ve always done cream first!

Mrs Bridges Tearooms

Mrs Bridges is a Leicester City Centre constitution. It’s most definitely a home away from home and brings back all the nostalgia from Grandma’s house – for a pot of tea, great sandwich options and the best home cooked cakes ever. They do a couple of High Tea options, a cream tea (scone with clotted cream, jam and a pot of tea) a tooth fairy tea (miniature cakes with a pot of tea) and an afternoon tea with what I can only describe as the works. Delicious!

During the warmer months, take a table in their outdoor courtyard which is also a really good spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

The Great Central Railway, Loughborough

If you love a steam train, heritage train lines and afternoon tea of course, this is an experience for you. Head to Loughborough Great Central Railway station where you’ll board one of the oldest steam engines and sit back for the next 90 minutes admiring the Leicestershire countryside whilst enjoying a traditional afternoon tea.

Once you arrive on the platform you’ll be guided to your carriage and seat and poured a cup of tea or coffee. Followed by a lovely traditional stand of finger sandwiches, savouries and fancy cakes. Lastly you’ll have the scones. Tea and coffee is topped up as required and bubbles can also be added to the table.

Afternoon tea aboard the Great Central Railway is a very relaxing experience, feel like you’re in the bygone era of steam travel as you pass by all the stations on the Great Central railway route.

 Veeno Wine Bar, Leicester

Having never experienced an afternoon tea in Italy, it was great to finally get a chance to see what the Italian twist would be and it didn’t disappoint. It started with Prosecco of course and there was more coffee options than tea. Savouries included open panini, olives, Italian smoked cheese and Prosciutto. Sweets were scones but with mascarpone, Sicilian lemon cakes and a dark Italian chocolate cake.

We really enjoyed our Italian inspired afternoon tea at Veeno and would thoroughly recommend it if you’d like a little twist on the usual classic British constitutaion.

The City Rooms, Leicester

This Grade I listed Georgian building and former Barrister’s home is now a stunning events venue with bedrooms and hosts some beautiful afternoon teas in its grand ballroom. One such tea is the Indian Afternoon Tea. The room is decorated with drapes and Mango lassi’s are served as welcome drink and even has the traditional masala chai to be enjoyed with the food. The tea has more of savoury selection such as Dhokla, open pav bhaji sandwiches, pizza samosas and bhajias with sweets, such as barfi, monthar and ginger biscuits.

We’ve now had Indian afternoon tea at the city rooms three times and love that it feels like there is a better split of savoury to sweet items than a traditional British afternoon tea.

If you fancy making a day of it the City Rooms is a small boutique hotel with four stylishly decorated rooms.

Winstanley House

Located two miles out of the city centre of Leicester, Winstanley House is a former school and is situated in leafy parklands. It is now a leading boutique hotel, premier dining venue as well as holding regular events. The Black Iron restaurant serves a beautiful afternoon tea each Saturday in one of their stunningly styled elegant yet contemporary rooms. Think Yvonne Ellen safari crockery in pastel hues,

Choose from a selection of four fillings for your melt in the mouth finger sandwiches. The Red Leicester and chive scone with marmite butter is a Leicestershire ode. With sweets like passionfruit pavlova and lemon meringue tartlet you literally won’t be able to resist. Oh and then there’s the tea selection. Choose from traditional teas or coffee. You must try the Malibu dream fruit tea and maybe even the Gin & Tonic tea. Absolute perfection. We found the afternoon tea at Winstanley House to be quite dainty and relaxed and love their selection of tea options.

Many poeple who stay over in Leicester, combine their Winstanley House stay with the afternoon tea experience. The hotel has beautifully appointed contemporary rooms.

Mirch Masala

Celebrating 30 years of business in 2026, Mirch Masala is located on Belgrave Road on the famous Golden Mile of Leicester and serves a diverse fusion of Indian, Indo-Chinese, Mexican, and Italian vegetarian and vegan street food dishes. Snacks, lunch, dinner or afternoon tea, they have you covered. 

Their afternoon tea has to be booked in advance and is an Indian take on the classic afternoon tea. Guests can enjoy unlimited masala chai or a drink of their choice with the following savoury options, mini vada sliders, cream cheese, spiced peas & aloo pin wheels, Red Leicester, sweetcorn & pepper puff, Bombay tea sandwich, sweet potato & sweetcorn samosa, Tapioca pearl pingers (Sabudana), emerald & ruby dhokla bites, whopped cucumber cream tart and mini chana bhatura calzone.

Sweets feature, golden gulab shrikhand tartlet, mini chocolate samosa, Dubai chocolate cheesecake, rose faludo pannacotta and mango velvet cheesecake.  

It’s very indulgent (but a really good twist on the classic) especially the sweet layer and we’d recommend coming hungry or taking the remainder in a box home.

Belmont Hotel

Located on Leicester’s leafy pedestrian promenade, known as New Walk, The Belmont  is a historic independent Hotel housed in a beautiful 19th-century property. 

Served between 2 pm and 5 pm daily, in the hotel’s, Windows Restaurant, designated lounges or private dining rooms guests can choose from a traditional afternoon tea or Prosecco, Champagne, a children’s afternoon tea as well as a smaller cream tea with scones, clotted cream and a pot of tea. 

They also have seasonal options such as the summer afternoon tea which has options like matcha and white chocolate swiss roll and vanilla and strawberry pavlova. With adequate notice they are more than happy to cater for dietary requirements. 

If you are in Leicester for an occasion or are planning a city break, we think the Belmont Hotel has a great location just a 15 minute walk into the heart of the city centre.

The Grand Hotel

The recently refurbished Grade II listed Grand Hotel in Leicester City Centre, offers great dining at its OW restaurant including afternoon tea. It’s more of a modern interpretation of the great British classic constitution in the brightly lit, calm tones of the OW bar area. Think gold hardware, teal and dusky pink hues and all the art-deco glamour but upgraded to reflect the modernity of today. 

Think delicate savouries, freshly baked scones, and handcrafted and patisserie, presented on three tier stands, a daily affair indeed. 

Afternoon tea options include, traditional, sparking (with a glass of Prosecco), Champagne, Nyetimber Afternoon Tea (features English sparkling wine), vegan, vegetarian and a children’s afternoon tea. They can also cater for dietary requirements with this great selection.

History lovers, when looking for a Leicester city centre abode, we’d recommend a stay at the historic Grand Hotel by the Unlimited Collection with its fine contemporary furnishings and sympathetic restoration.

Kilworth House Hotel & Theatre

This country house hotel located in North Kilworth in our opinion serves a luxury afternoon tea in Leicestershire, in fact it may just be the most luxorious in the county. Taken in the light filled glass orangery, overlooking lush gardens, the great British constitution has been served here for over 100 years. 

Imagine walking through a grand Victorian Italianite country house filled with art works and antique furniture then onto the Orangery where you’re seated and treated to a wonderful choice of teas, savouries and sweets and the most delicious melt-in-the mouth scones we’ve ever had and they do unlimited tea refills of your choice throughout service. Everything is made on site as you’d expect and following the tea, you can go and explore the stunning gardens and woodland that surrounds the property.

We opted for a Sparkling afternoon tea which included a glass of Prosecco, other options include, Full Afternoon Tea, Champagne Afternoon Tea and Children’s Afternoon Tea (under 12 years).

Kilworth House Hotel & Theatre makes for a beautiful luxurious Leicestershire break for a special occasion, with it’s stunning location and elegant interiors and service.

Belvoir Castle

It is said that afternoon tea was founded at Belvoir Castle by Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, as mentioned previously, it would be rude not to partake in the affair here we think!

Afternoon tea is served in the Apiary tearooms at Belvoir Castle and draws on the castle’s history and heritage with the menu celebrating local produce from the  surrounding countryside estate with a contemporary twist of Belvoir’s legacy.

The signature Regency- style afternoon tea is a fine mix of soft crustless sandwiches, small scones with cream and jam plus some cute patisserie items served in nothing less than china teacups, plates and teapots.

Guests have the option to upgrade their afternoon tea tickets with a visit to the Castle Gardens as well as the Castle itself.

Cattows Farm & Tea Rooms

If you’re not familiar with this spot The farm is family-run and located in Heather, Leicestershire featuring a popular farm shop, a restaurant, and seasonal activities. It offers pick-your-own fruit, outdoor and seasonal family activities like a Halloween pumpkin patch, sunflower picking and farm animals.

The family have been farming since 1899 and use only the freshest ingredients in their on-site cafe. 

The afternoon teas are served on tiered cake stands in a relaxing environment whilst taking in the delights of the farm. Loaded with delicate sandwiches, scones and individual cake and tray bake bites, it’s a pretty popular affair at Cattowes. Guests can also add a glass of Prosecco if they wish and dietary preferences are taken care with at least 48 hours notice, they cater for gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, nut-free, vegetarian and more.

Keep an eye out for seasonal afternoon teas, like Mother’s Day, Festive teas at Christmas and more.

Miss B’s Tea Rooms

Located in the market town of Melton Mowbray’s (‘Rural Capital of Food’) high street, Miss B’s Tea Rooms is Leicestershire’s only Tea Guild Award of Excellence Member.

The heavy beams and uneven floors add to the ambience in these Traditional Tea Rooms. The atmosphere is relaxed and truly from our experience, the service is second to none and nothing is too much trouble for the team. We love that Real loose leaf tea is served from china pots into bone china tea cups, sugar with tongs plus all the cute tearoom touches like doilies, pastel bunting and three tiered stands with miniature fancies!

When it comes to afternoon tea they serve a Gentlemen’s tea with a beer, a luxury afternoon tea as well as a children’s afternoon tea option. 

They also accommodate dietary requirements with notice such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten free as well as having a great tea selection.

If you fancy taking a day trip or overnight stay in Melton Mowbray, there’s plenty to do and you can easily tie in a visit to Miss B’s Tea Room for afternoon tea.

Beardsley’s Tearoom

Beardsley’s is a quaint village tearoom and gift shop located in Rearsby, Leicestershire. 

They serve  homemade cakes, light lunches prepared from an Aga, and afternoon teas with cosy interiors and a friendly smile! We love their vintage touches especially the tea cups plus saucers and general cosy beamed rooms.

As well as indoor seating Beardsley’s has an outdoor space for the warmer months. We really enjoyed the lemon and courgette cake & the fresh cream Victoria sponge, with strawberries as well as a pot of tea.

Beardsley’s caters for dietary requirements and afternoon teas must be booked at least 48 hours in advance and are served from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday – Saturday.

Launde Abbey

This retreat and sanctuary located in Leicestershire, and has been a place of worship for over 900 years, dating back to the 12th century and now serves as a Christian retreat with overnight stays. The public can visit the grounds, access the walking trails and have some delicious food in the cafe. Be respectful at the quiet zones.

It a lovely place to get out of the city walk the picturesque grounds and gardens and also treat yourself to an afternoon tea in tranquil surroundings. 

The afternoon tea includes, a selection of individually prepared sandwiches, delicious homemade cakes, homemade scone with cream and jam and a pot of tea of your choice. Guests can also make it all that bit more indulgent upgrade to a Prosecco Afternoon Tea.

Kings Lock Tea Rooms

Discover this canal-side tea rooms in Leicester. Located at King’s Lock in Aylestone. It makes for the perfect walk from the city centre to work up an appetite and is located in a small cottage just off the lock adjacent to the Aylestone Meadows area bridge (close to the car park). They also have a lovely outdoor space which overlooks fields and often have horses in the fields.

The tearoom serves a range of savouries throughout the day as well as homely sweet treats. Afternoon tea is taken inside and guests can opt for either the classic afternoon tea homemade scones, freshly made finger sandwiches, mini cakes and patisseries served on a tiered platter with a choice of a pot of tea or cafetière of coffee or Deluxe Afternoon tea, everything the Classic option offers, with the addition of mini savoury treats, mini cream cake selection and unlimited tea or coffee.

Please note that vegetarian options are available but other dietary requirements can’t be accommodated. The tearoom also need at least 24 hours notice prior to date of experience.
