What Does Vegetarian Friendly Mean?
When it comes to restaurants, cafes and coffee roasters in Chicago, when we refer to vegetarian friendly, we’ll be talking about non exclusive establishments that sell vegetarian food only. Although one-half of use is vegetarian, we tend to dine at a mix of places that serve both vegetarian friendly and non vegetarian food. This is particularly useful if you’re dining in a group of people who all have different dietary requirements.
Is Chicago Vegetarian & Vegan Friendly?
Yes, absolutely, The food scene in Chicago is immense with so much variety in terms of styles of cuisine as well as scope of restaurants. There are lots of vegetarian as well as plant based eateries in the city. Most restaurants who serve a mixed menu always have a few vegetarian options which are absolutely delicious and on some occasions I’ve heard it being said, better than the non vegetarian version! One thing is for sure vegetarian and vegans will not go hungry in Chicago.
Be-lavie Tip: If you’re unsure of a restaurants menu, do send them an email or disclose your dietary requirements when booking online, often they will call you or email you back explaining alternatives. This way the chef’s team has time to source, locate and plan dishes for you so you receive the same experience as your fellow non vegetarian and vegan diners. This is almost always the case in Michelin starred or fine dining restaurants.

Pizzeria Uno
So you’re in Chicago and you have to try the Deep Dish Pizza, right? Well there’s no other place than the OG, that is Pizzeria Uno. The Ohio Street branch located in a tall townhouse even has Historic Landmark status saying this is where Ike Sewll created the Deep Dish Pizza at this site in 1943.
His thought process was to combine some of Italy’s old, authentic recipes with the finest meats, spices, vegetables and cheeses, the pizza would become a substantial meal in itself. He then opened up Pizzeria Uno specialising in the Deep Dish Pizza but as there was no way for it to expand, he also opened Pizzeria Due on the opposite street corner in the lower level of a beautiful, Victorian mansion.
Back at the Ohio Street branch, there are a range of things on the menu not just the Deep Dish Pizza and they make some pretty neat cocktails too.
The resident photographer will come around and take a little photo of you and your party so you can keep it as a souvenir or choose to buy extra copies! A little touristy but sometimes it works!!
Be-lavie Tip; The base of The Deep Dish Pizza is a little taller and thicker and much more filling than for example a New York style or Neopolitan pizza. It’s worth speaking to your server about portion sizes. This is definitely an acquired taste and we’re not sure if it’s for us but when in Chicago, it would be rude not to partake!!

Be-lavie Recommendations: The Mango gin and tonic is delicious with a lovely kick of red chilli made with Hendrick’s & Brockman’s gins, honey, pineapple and orange juices. We’d recommend the mushroom and quinoa burger, the vegan tortilla soup which contains black beans and comes with avocado and tortillas and if you need some sides, the loaded fries are very good indeed.
Bloom Plant Based Kitchen
Quite possibly, one of our favourite restaurants in Chicago, located in Wicker Park, Bloom specialises in offering a range of geniously prepared, creative dishes that are 100% plant based minus the use of any animal products.
Having a Bib Gourmand with a proud mention in the Michelin Guide, Bloom’s chef / owner, Rodlfo Cuadros (of Amaru) and his alert team, transform the humble vegetable into something you would never think is possible.
The restaurant is a beautiful space filled with greenery and foliage, cool light fixtures and a seat at the counter will ensure you have the best view in the house to watch the team work closely with some interesting ingredients.

Accompany the cheese board with rainbow carrot hummus which includes, smoked paprika glaze, carrot hummus, fried kale. The half pizza with heirloom tomatoes, vinaigrette and rocket is a great side. For something more substantial share the Yuca Gnocchi with toasted Yuca, parsnip puree, mushroom sofrito and kale. Leave room to try the exceptional desserts. We opted for the Chocolate Mousse (lemon shortbread, parsnips, blackberry preserves, brownie crumbles) and the Camote Cheesecake (cashew sweet potato, coconut cream, almond tahini crust).
Daisies
This Michelin Green Star and Big Gourmand Restaurant is truly one of the most impressive yet non fussy places you’re sure to dine in Chicago. Away from the fancy tourist spots, it’s a real gem.
A big open airy space, with a long bar, private dining rooms as well as a bakery in the back, this is somewhere that needs to be added you your vegetarian friendly food list in Chicago. They have a huge plant based and veggie menu selection.
The Michelin Green Star means that sustainability is at the core of Daisies. The owner and executive chef of Daisies, Joe Frillman has a brother with a farm, whose 30 acre property is located 70 miles from Chicago. As many of the ingredients as possible come from this farm, with some fruits being source nearby.
They have a dedicated fermentation program so they can utilise all this product in the winter months and limit waste. Their compost program returns discarded produce back to the farm for use as fertiliser and chicken feed.
Daisies is impressive, not just is the food absolutely delicious but their reduction on the carbon footprint is absolutely mind blowing!

To start try the Frito Mitso, cheese curds, tarragon aioli and season veg, and shaved brussel sprouts with pear pistacchio and rosemary. For mains, the Pappardelle with a mushroom rago, house cheese and badil is divine. For dessert the strawberry shortcake in the perfect summer sweet dish with chiffon cake, elderflower, and a salted ricotta ice cream.

Roof Tops
London House Chicago
Located on the 22 nd and 23 rd floor of The London House Hotel by Hilton’s Curio Collection, is the rooftop bar that you NEED to visit. It has the most perfect aerial views of the Chicago Riverwalk but is parallel to one of Chicago’s most iconic masterpieces in terms of architecture, The Wrigley Building.
Whether you come here for a sundowner or dinner with the twinking lights of the district or visit during the day, the view are insane, as are the food and drinks. It’s table service so all you need to do is sit back and relax and admire the surroundings.
The drinks menu is pretty extensive and the food is great quality bar food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices. If you’re heading up in the evening, it’s definitely worth dressing up for!
