What Does Vegetarian Friendly Mean?
When it comes to restaurants, cafes and coffee roasters in Chicago, when we refer to vegetarian friendly, we’ll be talking about non exclusive establishments that sell vegetarian food only. Although one-half of use is vegetarian, we tend to dine at a mix of places that serve both vegetarian friendly and non vegetarian food. This is particularly useful if you’re dining in a group of people who all have different dietary requirements.

Is Chicago Vegetarian & Vegan Friendly?
Yes, absolutely, The food scene in Chicago is immense with so much variety in terms of styles of cuisine as well as scope of restaurants. There are lots of vegetarian as well as plant based eateries in the city. Most restaurants who serve a mixed menu always have a few vegetarian options which are absolutely delicious and on some occasions I’ve heard it being said, better than the non vegetarian version! One thing is for sure vegetarian and vegans will not go hungry in Chicago.
Be-lavie Tip: If you’re unsure of a restaurants menu, do send them an email or disclose your dietary requirements when booking online, often they will call you or email you back explaining alternatives. This way the chef’s team has time to source, locate and plan dishes for you so you receive the same experience as your fellow non vegetarian and vegan diners. This is almost always the case in Michelin starred or fine dining restaurants.

A fresh produce grocery store come deli cafe, The Goddess and Grocer is a wonderful sppt for picking up things to grab and go or purchasing staples for the kitchen cupboard. The bakery and barista counter does a wonderful range of coffees, teas, fresh juices as well as freshly made sandwiches to order, sweet treats as well as savoury tarts and the most wonderful breakfast croissants. The brand has numerous locations around the Chicago and during our trips to Chicago we’ve visited one outlet at West Loop and another in Streeterville.

The outlet in Streeterville is a lot larger and has a big coffee barista bar, sweet treats and savoury baked goods area as well as a counter for fruit juices, breakfast orders and more. This one has a lot more indoor seating and has a very cool vibe about it with neon wall writing reading, ‘Eat Now, caffeinate’ adding a spot of fun to any visit.

Having a four locations around Chicago, Kanela Breakfast Club, we ate at the Streeterville outlet. Kanela [kuh-nel-uh] means cinnamon in Greek and we can vouch it does feature in quite a few of their menu offerings.
Kanela serve a fusion of Greek-American breakfast and lunch dishes which have been cooked from scratch using ingredients that have been sourced locally.

Restaurants (Lunch & Dinner)
Pizza Restaurants
Pizzeria Uno
So you’re in Chicago and you have to try the Deep Dish Pizza, right? Well there’s no other place than the OG, that is Pizzeria Uno. The Ohio Street branch located in a tall townhouse even has Historic Landmark status saying this is where Ike Sewll created the Deep Dish Pizza at this site in 1943.
His thought process was to combine some of Italy’s old, authentic recipes with the finest meats, spices, vegetables and cheeses, the pizza would become a substantial meal in itself. He then opened up Pizzeria Uno specialising in the Deep Dish Pizza but as there was no way for it to expand, he also opened Pizzeria Due on the opposite street corner in the lower level of a beautiful, Victorian mansion.

Back at the Ohio Street branch, there are a range of things on the menu not just the Deep Dish Pizza and they make some pretty neat cocktails too.
The resident photographer will come around and take a little photo of you and your party so you can keep it as a souvenir or choose to buy extra copies! A little touristy but sometimes it works!!

Be-lavie Tip; The base of The Deep Dish Pizza is a little taller and thicker and much more filling than for example a New York style or Neopolitan pizza. It’s worth speaking to your server about portion sizes. This is definitely an acquired taste and we’re not sure if it’s for us but when in Chicago, it would be rude not to partake!!

Be-lavie Recommendations: The Pomegranate Margaritas are excellent. We shared a small vegetarian special deep dish pizza it was definitely enough for two people with the larger base and filling topping.
Bonci Pizzeria
This concept was brought to Chicago’s West Loop by Rome’s hottest Pizzaiolos, Gabriele Bonci in 2017. Located in the cool and hip West Loop, we love the feel and vibe of this laid back eatery. The concept is that diners head up to the counter, choose from a variety of toppings of pizza and the amount they’d like it then cut off. This slice is then weighted and payment is based on weight. The pizzas are then warmed up and bought over whilst you take a seat at the rustic counter’s and high chairs. It’s possible to take away of eat in and there are drinks available to purchase in the chillers. Bonci is a Zagat restaurant-rated establishment.
The pizzas are delicious, fresh, and the best part is you can get yourself as much as you want without having to commit to a large portion, that you can’t eat and end up carrying home.

Having a Bib Gourmand with a proud mention in the Michelin Guide, Bloom’s chef / owner, Rodlfo Cuadros (of Amaru) and his alert team, transform the humble vegetable into something you would never think is possible.

PLANTA Queen
This completely plant-based Asian restaurant serves incredible sushi, dumplings and wok-based specialities. With multiple locations around the states, the Chicago branch is located in North River. It gets pretty busy so our advice is to book well in advance if you’re planning on getting a table here. We booked three weeks before our trip to Chicago.

The atmosphere is lively and the restaurant has a bar area, some cosy booths for date nights as well as stand alone tables. The decor is pretty with Asian-inspired florals on a dark wallpaper. Tours & Activities for dessert fans
If you love sweet eats and desserts, then you may want to book onto these tours that delve into some of Chicago’s most popular sugary spots, complete with tastings. Firstly ice-cream lovers, you have to grab yourself some tickets for The Museum of Ice-cream located right by the Magazine Mile. This unique experience allows you to skip the line (trust us it can be a very ling line in peak times!) and spend and hour and a half learning unique things about the history of ice=cream complete with sensory experiences and samples of course!
Head slightly out of the Downtown area and book a Fulton Market Donut Adventure with Tastings. Lasting 2 hours, you’ll get the opportunity to taste some of teh best donuts in Chicago in one of the city’s most hip and trendiest neighbourhood. Trust us, it’s very cool, we stayed here at the Hoxton. one of Chicago’s coolest boutique hotels.
Roof Tops & Bars
Havana Grill
Located in the heart of River North Havana bar and grill brings all the Cuban vibes to Chicago. Grab a seat on the terrace or inside in one of the booths or our personal preference, at the bar this place serves up a fantastic selection of pan-latin cuisine, tropical and classic cocktails. We love Havana Grill for its pre-dinner cocktails with great latin music and a chilled vibe.
Although we do prefer to grab a drink here, there are vegetarian dishes which look delicious, but we haven’t tried these. The famous guacamole, black bean soup (Sopa de Frijol), crispy plaintain chips, and selected salads are vegetarian-friendly.

London House Chicago
Located on the 22 nd and 23 rd floor of The London House Hotel by Hilton’s Curio Collection, is the rooftop bar that you NEED to visit. It has the most perfect aerial views of the Chicago Riverwalk but is parallel to one of Chicago’s most iconic masterpieces in terms of architecture, The Wrigley Building.
Whether you come here for a sundowner or dinner with the twinking lights of the district or visit during the day, the view are insane, as are the food and drinks. It’s table service so all you need to do is sit back and relax and admire the surroundings.

The drinks menu is pretty extensive and the food is great quality bar food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices. If you’re heading up in the evening, it’s definitely worth dressing up for!

Be-lavie Tip: When making an online reservation, make sure to stipulate that you’d like an outdoor table on the rooftop as Floor 21 does have an indoor bar area where there are no real impressive views.

Gratuities Culture in Chicago
As with most American cities there is a gratuities culture in Chicago, which first time visitors may not be aware of, especially if travelling from Europe where ethos is primarily non existence.
Often food bill receipts will have a suggested amount to tip, such as 15%, 20%. 35%. This can add a substantial amount to your food bill at the top end. You should pay what you think is right and what you feel reflects the service you received in the restaurant.
Many establishments payment machines also have the option of ‘no tip’ and it’s always a good idea to feed back your concerns to the staff if something wasn’t to your satisfaction within reason.
