CANTEEN-STYLE PIZZA NOSHING AT OSCAR & ROSIE’S
Did anyone say Pizza? Margherita, fresh ingredients, no plastic grated cheese, gluten free? What Yes? I’m there! Now you’re asking where, aren’t you? Well Oscar & Rosie’s of course! It opened it’s doors to the folk of Leicester back in April 2017 and I took the opportunity for some Saturday lunch noshing!
Before we get to the food, you know how I love a story and Oscar & Rosie’s has a pretty good one – so go and have a read!
After numerous outlets and premises in Nottingham, the brand is relocating into their 4th and final home in the city in September 2017. If you’ve ever visited the Nottingham location, it is more of a Pizza restaurant however the Market Street, Old Town, Leicester joint is as the name suggests, a canteen style restaurant. There are long tables running half the length of the restaurant with a couple of tables to the side seating small groups.
As you walk in you are greeted by the friendly staff, one front of house and another producing pizza’s to perfection in the kitchen! The walls don exposed brickwork and lovely quirky fun artwork fills the establishment. Spot the brilliant Public Eye posters on the back cutlery wall and the psychedelic wall leading up to the toilets.

We popped in for a quick bite to eat for lunch one Saturday whilst running a few errands in town. Now lunchtimes have a special, which includes a slice of either veggie or non-veggie pizza with a portion of wedges for £5. However after learning that Oscar & Rosie’s can make any of their 12 Pizza’s gluten free, I was literally spoilt for choice! I do have a personal little rule though, I like to secretly compare Margaritas, so basically if the basic Margarita is made to perfection, I’m convinced they know how to make a pizza. Hence Dr C and I opted to share the Gluten Free Margarita.
Just a note, if you are Gluten Intolerant the Pizzas will be fine however if you are a Coeliac, and have a severe gluten allergy, it’s worth noting that there could be traces of flour around the kitchen. To be fair, this is explained to you when you order so just bear that in mind.
We chose simple ‘Lemony’ lemonade (made from organic lemons and baring the #Drink No evil on the can) to accompany our pizza and not long after we collected our cutlery and admired the fun and bold interiors, our Margarita was presented to us on red and white checked paper. Needless to say we ditched the cutlery and dived straight in with our hands and well that fresh, gluten free dough, homemade pasta sauce and beautifully hand cut mozzarella with the odd sprinkle of basil leaves was well and truly devoured!
I’m going to go as far as to say, that really was the best Gluten Free Margherita I’ve ever had, you know I’m not saying that as if you know me, you know I’m brutally honest! Infact Dr C even agreed!
The ambience, the friendly staff, the pop-art décor and obvs the food, make Oscar & Rosie’s THE best Pizza haunt in Leicester city centre! If you don’t mind sharing a table, getting your own cutlery and napkins and not being traditionally waited on, this is definitely your kind of place. This is a no frills Pizza at it’s best but not compromising on quality of locally sourced ingredients and taste.
I am so looking forward to a replay of Saturday lunch at Oscar & Rosie’s as I have my eye on the Tyrannosaurus Veg and I have my eyes and taste buds longing to try the L’homme Français, basically a garlic bread pizza! Additionally they do metre long Pizzas, yes that’s a pizza which is a metre long!
If you are a Vegan, worry not there are a choice of 9 pizzas, which can be yours for consumption. For me I just love the concept of this place and the fact that it accommodates for both adults and children, Vegans, Vegetarians, carnivores and intolerances is just the shiny red sherry on top!
