To be completely transparent, during our visit to Chicago, we’ve stayed at the Hoxton in Fulton Market as well as Hotel EMC2 in Streeterville, which have been included as a spotlight features in this article. The other hotels are those we had on our Iists when researching the cool and trendy hotel options in different neighbourhoods in Chicago.
Chicago truly has a wonderful range of hotels to suit all kinds of budgets for travellers, right from ultra chic luxury boutique hotels to affordable and great value. This article contains some of our short listed. This may sound a little odd if you haven’t visited the United States of America before, as in Europe boutique hotels can be as small as four to five rooms. All of these hotels are well located to explore the city at great depth with details included in our City Guide and not to miss photo spots in Chicago
What are Cool & Unique Boutique Hotels?
It’s good to note that in general boutique hotels are on a lot smaller scale than the usual hotels in the United States. In Europe, we’re used to smaller boutiques but in the US, they usually have around 150-200 rooms.
We tend to opt for boutique hotels to experience a more individualised and intimate style of service as well as surroundings. If you are also looking for the smaller and finer details such as a concierge service which makes you feel more looked after, then boutique hotels generally deliver well on these.

The hotels that we have picked here all have the same interesting cool or trendy features that set them apart from regular places to stay in the city. For example, the artworks they display, the murals on their bedroom walls which have been painted by local street artists, Some have quirky furniture finds or even a theme altogether. Service and hospitality are always a priority for us though, no matter how fun and quirky they are.
Where is the Best Place in Chicago to Stay For Visitors?
In our experience many of the hotels are located around West loop, very hip and trendy, which is a 20 minute walk to the downtown district itself including River North or Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park and even Streeterville. No matter where you stay, remember to take advantage of seeing the city with some very unique tours that provide an informative insight into The Windy City.

Hotel EMC2 Autograph Collection (Hotel Spotlight)
Style: Luxury, yet classy forming an intersection between science and art, definitely a flair of Sci-fi about this hotel combined with impeccable quality design placement.

This 195 room hotel by Marriott Autograph Collection oozes style and character right in the midst of The Magazine Mile and many of the cities hotspots. The name Hotel EMC2 is a play on Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, E=MC2.
Located within walking distance of not just many of the cities best shops and ateliers but also the Navy Pier and a whole host of delicious up market restaurants as well as local favourites. The 22-storey hotel (our queen room was situated on the 16th floor) is very unique and the epitomy of cool and unique boutique hotels in Chicago.

Hotel amenities include: High speed Wi-Fi access, 24-hour fitness centre, 24 hour business centre on the second floor, Robotic Attendants called Cleo & Leo who take care of guest In-room dining needs (accessed via the TV menu) from the Albert, in house restaurant, Hotel EMC2 also hosts events and meetings to accommodate varying numbers of attendees

The exterior and lobby area have an air of futuristic metallic details which adds to the high end nature of the hotel. Keep an eye out for the science visionary artefacts in the lobby as well as the Leonardo da Vinci quote adjacent to the entrance that reads, ‘Study the science of art, Study the art of science, Develop your senses, learn how to see, Realise that everything connects, To everything else’.

Guest rooms come in King and Queen categories, with black and gold accents throughout and beautifully sci-fi inspired artwork on the walls. They are classy and elegant but with possibly a more masculine twist. Although somewhere we think the ladies will fancy too! Notably, we loved the brown Make-up flannel (if you know you know, ladies -this way none of that excess foundation can stain the early white towels). In-room toiletries come in full size bottles of Bigelow’s luxurious shampoo, conditioner, body wash attached to the shower cubicle., alongside smaller bottles of the body cream, which you pop in your handbag and re-use.

Windows span floor to ceiling with city views, probably the best white robes we’ve ever wrapped ourselves in after. along day of sights, ready to step into the uber classy gold accented open glass wet lab shower. Which incidentally forms a beautiful centre=piece in the room. Worry not as a deep blue curtain slides across from the clever wardrobe storage solution and covers the glass panel to give some privacy whilst you shower, should you need it.

The rooms turn the notch up with the addition of Amazon Alexa, Gramophone amplifiers, moveable workstations, Keurig® coffee machine with complimentary coffee and tea, mini-fridge, and hand-held steamers, just to mention a few in-room amenities to make your futuristic stroke science theme stay hit the bar high!

The beautiful Albert Restaurant, named after the great Albert Einstein in keeping with the hotels branding, specialising in Italian-American fare and is extremely photogenic and fanciful in its delicious foodie offerings. Note the gold accepts of the focal point that is the bar with artwork on the walls, high tables and regalr group seating on the floor of the restarants. The walls are perceived to look a little like. a library with dark wood drawer fascias and book spines.

The Albert serves breakfast daily, brunch at weekends, dinner and have a bar menu as well as offering private dining in a space close to the kitchen towards the back of the restaurant. The Archive Lounge specialises in Sicilian style pizza.

The hotels acclaimed Chef Stephen Chiappetti is from Chicago and has worked under some fantastic teams as well as training at the most prestigious colleges. His food is inspired by his Calabrian heritage.

We were kindly hosted for dinner one night and would thoroughly recommend a stay here should include an evening of dining. Although the menu changes seasonally, we’d thoroughly recommend Strawberry Fields to start, which a fine cocktail made with gin, select aperitif, strawberry and sweet vermouth. The Artichoke, which is fried with lemon gremolata and tossed with hot house rocket is alight starter option of a warm salad. For main, the four cheese ravioli is layered with a truffle cream sauce and drizzled with balsamic glaze. A rich and decadent main yet not to sickly. To end the chocolate soufflé cake is a wonderful way to top off The Albert experience. It’s a 72% flourless chocolate cake topped with a fresh berry salad and served with vanilla cream.

We also got a slice of the olive oil cake (made with pistachio, flowered honey, sweetened creams and orange curd) accompanied with whipped cream to take away. Delicious and moist, perfect with a tea the following day!
