Where is the Afternoon Tea at Knight & Garter Served?
If you’ve been to Knight & Garter, you’ll be familiar with the beautifully stylish décor which has a slight flair of Hawksmoor but way more earthy tones and a real ambience for Hygge. The best place to enjoy the afternoon tea complete with comfort factor, would be through the book lined door into the cosy restaurant area. Opt for a booth seat (at time of booking) for a more intimate affair.

The Beverages
As you take your seats and settle in, you’ll be offered some beverages in the form of Hoogly Teas and you can add the option of the sparkling teas or bottle of house champagne to your afternoon tea too.
Hoogly Tea
If you’re not familiar with Hoogly tea, this is a British brand founded in Brighton by a Danish tea enthusiast with a passion for the Nordic adjective, hygge. The teas are an indulgent yet healthy blended and packed in South East of England. Ethically sourced and fair trade, even their tea pyramids are biodegradable and certified by the soil association as they’re made from plant extract and not plastic. There is a great range of flavours at the Knight including, Earl Grey, Classic Green, Spiced Orange, Rhubarb & Vanilla, Berrylicious, Chocolate Brownie, Sparkling white & English breakfast
Organic Vegan Sparkling Teas
Produced in Denmark these sparking teas are a perfect pairing to your afternoon tea. They come in two options, The Green, which is made with green tea, lemongrass and white teas with notes of citrus, slight ginger and creating a crisp and fresh placement on the palette with 5% ABV. The other option is Pink, and is non-alcoholic with creamy raspberry and hibiscus with a slightly drier aftertaste.
The Food
The afternoon tea at Knight & Garter comes beautifully arranged on a two-tier simply yet elegant stand. The bottom layer hosts an array of rolls and savoury profiteroles, and the top layer is sectioned into an area of pies and savoury rolls with the remaining space reserved for the sweets. The offerings on the stand serves two and is quite a substantial portion size, you can safely skip your next meal is our advice.
The Savouries
This is most definitely an impressive homemade medley of three freshly filled batch rolls (plain, sesame seed topped and mixed seed topping) including smoked salmon, BLT (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato) and avocado with brie.
The fillings are classic flavours prepared perfectly, and a little different from the usual finger sandwiches which can sometimes get a little dry around the edges. Soft, fluffy and delicious. The BLT is also a great dedication to the British breakfast or brunch.
For the vegetarian menu the batch rolls are filled with Red Leicester and cucumber, a tasty plant-based chicken Caesar and avocado and Brie. When you’re in Leicester, you have to take part in the Red Leicester constitution! The Brie and avocado is a great combination with the cheese being soft and gooey and the plant-cased chicken was moist, juicy and full of flavour, which can sometimes be difficult to achieve with meat substitutes.
To top it all off, what goes with a good roll, a small bowl of root vegetable crisps of course. There is no better combination than a good sarnie and crisps and Knight & Garter’s version is exceptional.
Ever tasted a savoury profiterole? Nope? Well today is your lucky day – the beetroot and mascarpone profiteroles are soft and melt in the mouth with a delicate taste of beetroot, with its light pink hues and the perfect whipped mascarpone filling.
The savoury selection doesn’t end there, in fact there’s more to come. For the meat lovers there is a miniature beef brisket pie and sausage roll. The beef brisket has been cooked to perfection and is already a popular choice with its beautifully made pastry casing. Finally the mini sausage roll will go straight in the mouth with it’s precisely executed flaky puff pastry casing.
The vegetarians need not worry as the broccoli, cauliflower and cheddar pie is immaculately cooked with the perfect outer of pastry and flavoursome creamy filling, seasoned thoroughly. The spicy bean and cheddar roll is the sausage roll alternative and again is made from the most flakiest pastry, with a slight kick of spicy beans coming through.
The Sweets
Lets grab the petite scones first. Perfectly sized (who wants a huge dry scone?) and disintegrate in the mouth. These fruit and buttermilk scones comes layered with clotted cream and a pot of jam. You’ll be having the Devon custom of a cream tea here, with the clotted cream first and then the jam which you can drop on yourself! In our opinion there is no better way than the Devon cream tea option – good work Knight & Garter!
Next pick up those caramel-filled Churros. Cute but perfectly formed minis save the extra effort of dipping as the lightly sweet caramel sauce is inside the churro and marries so well with the slightly salty exterior of the choux pastry.
Afternoon tea at Knight & Garter wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t serve their hot drinks with a side of their signature macarons. If you regularly have hot drinks here, you’ll know just how delicious the macarons area.
Brownie lovers unite, an adequate handful of brownie bites top the stand with a rich chocolate taste yet soft and squidgy in the centre.
Finally, the pièce de resistance. Why have little circular cheesecakes when you can have passionfruit cheesecake lollies? Utter genius, fun to eat presented on small lolly sticks and impeccably indulgent, save this as the finale! End your incredible afternoon tea at Knight & Garter with a bang!

It is a truly unique affair in terms of the creativity of the chefs in producing fantastic twists on classics but also pairing a variety of flavour combinations.
