How to Get to Chicago.
By Plane
Chicago is home to two international airports, including Chicago O’ Hare and Chicago Midway airport.
From the UK we would recommend a direct flight with British Airways from London Heathrow with a flight time of 8 hours and 45 minutes.
From the airport, visitors can make their way to their accommodation via Uber, Lyft or travel via The Loop (The ‘L’) train. The Blue Line, which runs from the O’Hare as well as Midway and leads to Downtown where it’s possible to change and get the line to your final destination. Check Maps and Fares for exact information
By Car
If traveling by car from other locations in the United States, Chicago has a Northerly central location and the following interstates lead to the city: I-90 (Kennedy Expressway), I-94 (Dan Ryan Expressway), I-55 (Stevenson Expressway), I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway), and I-294 (Tri-State Tollway).

What’s The Best Way to Get Around Chicago?
We would recommend walking as well as The L.
The main areas of Chicago are extremely walkable but if you are heading out of the downtown area, which we would strongly recommend as can be seen from the guide below, the “L” is a brilliant and good value for money option.
A 24 hour ticket (which can be bought at the ticket machines at each station) is $5 and well worth it. It is possible to simply tap your credit card at the turnstiles but this can add up to more per day so the $5 option is the best.
For “L” routes, fares and further information, head to Transit Chicago.
If travelling at night, the L is perfectly safe and accessible but we chose to use Uber for extended dinner reservations that ran late into the night.
When is The Best Time to Visit Chicago?
Chicago has four distinct seasons but locals have been known to say, all four are possible on the same day! Luckily we didn’t experience these on our visit!
It is possible to visit Chicago anytime of year and this is dependent on what you plan to do, The summer sees a more humid warm climate with highs of around 28°C-30°C and the winter is pretty snowy with temperatures reaching an average of 1°C.
Due to Chicago’s location on Lake Michigan, much of the weather is governed by the lake with thunderstorms being pretty common between March to September with some heavy short showers in June.
Outdoor Lovers and Sun Worshippers, who have the Budget….
If you love to spend a lot of time outdoors and make use of the beaches around Lake Michigan as well as spend time in the parks, going to outside events and the like, June, early September is a good time. The weather is pretty warm, there is less rain but the temperatures are still very pleasant. Exploring the riverwalk area is great, at its best, as are the parks and gardens.
The one downside is that the city does feel pretty humid and prices for accommodation and flights are at their highest. Also it does get quite crowded with school holidays around July and August.
Technically the idea time to visit is between May and June and September through to October for the perfect Shoulder season getaway. There are still some outdoor events and festivals and the crowds are less.
Bargain Hunters, who don’t mind the Cool…
November to April is a good time to go if you don’t mind colder days as you could luck out on the weather and have no rain and moderate winds. Many indoor attractions will be better priced, restaurants will most likely have more availability with the biggest savings being on flights and accommodation.
We visited in early June and experienced highs of 28°C daily with lows of around 20°C. There was the odd shower but temperatures remained warm. Just carry a brolly with you at all times.
The Best Time of Year for Photography
The city is especially beautiful when it’s filled with blue skies, green foliage and colourful flowers. This is the spring and summer time but head out early to capture those shots before the bright sun causes bleaching. You can also avoid the crowds in your photos at this time.
The Autumn is a great time also to visit if you can stand the slightly cooler climate but you will be rewarded with stunning colours of leaves and other foliage around the River walk, Magnificent Mile and around the parks. Now that’s a tip from a local we met when visiting.
How Long to Spend in Chicago?
This of course is dependent on your interests and what you plan to see in your time in Chicago. We would recommend around three to five days to comfortably get a feel for the city and a few of it’s neighbourhoods. Chicago is the perfect long weekend city break but adding a couple more days allows visitors to take things slow and discover the city’s gems and head further out into the suburbs,

Millenium Park truly is a wonderful lake front outdoor space that must be visited. It was constructed over a huge plot of land that was a former parking lot.

**Where to get the shot** Unfortunately during our visit the park was so busy and crowded with events that we didn’t get close enough to capture any of the details.
Cloudgate (Millenium Park)
Probably the most photographed artwork in Chicago, Cloudgate or ‘The Bean’ is quite the icon! This piece was first showcased in 2005, and is artist’s, Anish Kapoor’s first outdoor public structure in the USA.

** Where to get the shot** Unfortunately, during our visit in June 2024, The structure was closed for maintenance work so we had to get creative and stood near the restaurants and eateries in the park. Usually we’d recommend the classic shot of standing to the side or right in front on the sculpture.
Crown Fountain
Artist Jaume Plensa has created this interactive sculpture made of a black granite reflecting pool between a pair of 50 foot glass brick towers. The towers have LED screens featuring huge faces of Chicago locals. During the summer months, the towers have a stream of water coming out of them.
**Where to get the shot** This area is pretty busy and crowded at most times but just take the couple of steps to the raised level and snap away from there.
Lurie Gardens

Underground Pedway & Downtown Secrets Walking Tour.
If you fancy learning about Chicago’s underground Pedway (underground passageways) this is a must do tour. The mysterious underground tunnels downtown that keep locals warm & dry in bad weather during the winter months. Wandering the Pedway, through hidden corridors of stained glass and even underground swimming pools, you’ll access interiors that seem to come up out of nowhere!
The tour lasts two hours and is one that will enable you to discover some of Chicago’s gems that you wouldn’t usually know that existed!
Here are some of the tour’s highlights for notable photo descriptions.
The cultural Centre is one one of the city’s main and most popular cultural attractions. Spanning the length of an entire block opposite Millennium Park, in the Loop area of downtown, the centre is home to many incredible gems. It’s completely free to visit and they also hold free music and art events. The centre is home to the world’s largest Tiffany stained glass dome as well as a smaller version, which isn’t as well known, but it should be.
World’s Largest Tiffany Dome – Cultural Centre
This absolute stunning dome was completed in 1897 and is located in the Preston Bradley Hall in the Cultural Centre. It is said to be the largest undertaking in the history of the Tiffany Glass & decorating Company with 2,848 faceted glass jewels of rippled and streaky opalescent glass that have been cut in a fish scale pattern and assembled to give off maximum light. Lighter shades of yellowish green glass were used at the bottom of the dome and the colour becomes gradually richer and darker toward the top. At the centre of the dome is a great glass rosette encircled by the signs of the zodiac.
Be-lavie Fact: The Tiffany Dome is valued at being worth around $35,000,000, more than the building that it is located, the whole Cultural Centre real estate which spans a block!
- Street Address :78 East Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602 Website: http://www.chicagoculturalcenter.org.
- Find it Here: Map Location.
**Where to get the shot** There are many great perspectives here but patience is key as it can get slightly crowded at certain times of the day. Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid large tour groups or crowds. We would suggest standing under the centre of the dome or get a full length shot by slightly moving out. Plan your shot in advance as visitors do move in and out, especially if you’re aiming for a people free shot!
The Grand Army of The Republic Rotunda (G.A.R)
Another much smaller Tiffany like dome at the Cultural Centre is located in the Grand Army of the Republic room. It may be smaller but some say it looks even more beautiful than it’s larger counterpart.
The G.A.R opened in 1897 to represent union soldiers in the US Civil War who fought to preserve union and abolish slavery. Between 2021-2022 the hall was restored by preservation experts after a generous donation. It is made up of 62,000 pieces of art glass.
**Where to get the shot** On our visit we had to view it form the entrance of the hall due to a private event being prepared. We’ll leave you to decide which you prefer! We would suggest taking the shot from the right under the dome when open.
Macy’s Stained Glass Ceiling
Macy’s on State Street (previously known as the Marshal Field’s store), walk in on the ground floor and simply look up!
You will be blown away by the 6,000 square foot mosaic made of favrile glass, containing over 1.6 million pieces.. The vaulted ceiling’s glass work was was completed in 1907 and designed by Louis C. Tiffany, art director of famed Tiffany & Co.
Be-lavie Tip: Take the lift to the fifth floor for a much closer look at the open mosaic work.
**Where to get the shot** Stand right at the centre of the ground floor near the cosmetics counters for the best longitudinal photo opportunity.
Macy’s Duck Egg Blue Victorian Clock
Exterior Victorian style clocks at Macy’s were put in when the building was constructed between 1901-1902 and are quite beautiful, especially the colour way against the building work.
**Where to get the shot** the corner of Randolph and State Streets
- Street Address: 111 North State Street, Chicago, IL 60602.
- Find it Here: Map Location:
The Chicago Picasso
Often referred to as The Picasso is an untitled sculpture by pablo Picasson in the Daley Plaza. It was installed in 1967 and is said to have “precipitated an aesthetic shift in civic and urban planning, broadening the idea of public art beyond the commemorative. Its definitely worth a look for its lines and modernity even today.
- Street Address: 50 West Washington Street, Chicago, IL 60602.
- Find it Here: Map Location:
**where to get the shot** The square is pretty crowded, so to get the full sculpture, head back as far as possible until it’s in the frame or concentrate on certain details for a close-up perspective.
Navy Pier
We heard from a few locals that Navy Pier is quite touristy, however we did actually see many locals hanging out here on our very short visit.
Navy Pier is a 3300 foot pier stretching out into Lake Michigan, situated in the Streeterville neighbourhood of Chicago. The area has been modernised and is made up of over 50 acres of restaurants shops, theatres, family activities as well as an entertainment park, the Centennial Wheel (which dominates teh skyline) gardens, exhibitions. You can even take boat tours out into Lake Michigan from the Pier. In actual fact it is Chicago’s second most visited attraction.
- Street Location: 600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 website https://navypier.org/.
- Find it Here: Map Location.
**Where to get the shot** The side of the Pier structure near the shops to capture some of the old building or head out to the front of the Pier. The Centennial Wheel is also quite a landmark which dominates parts of the skyline.
Lincoln Park
An affluent leafy green neighbourhood located in the North of Chicago and made most famous by it’s famous free zoo. The area itself has the park as well as a number of great restaurants and street locations for photography.
The park itself has some wonderful photography spots such as the nature boardwalk and the honeycomb as well as other notable statues.
The Nature Boardwalk
This is a beautiful serene spot right in front of the skyscraper skyline which blends nature with urban vibes. Walk around the Lilly pond and take in the beautiful flowers and sounds of the wildlife such as pretty birds and bees and dragonflies, especially in the spring and summer.
- Street Address: 2121 North Stockton Dr, Chicago, IL 60614.
- Find it Here: Map Location:
**where to get the shot** Anywhere along the boardwalk is pretty but especially close to the lilly pond.
People’s Park Pavilion (The Honeycomb)
Located in the South end of Lincoln Park Zoo’s Nature Boardwalk, you don’t need to go to the zoo to see it, we were quite conscious about this, you’ll see a honeycomb shaped dome. Built in 2012 it’s inspiration comes from the natural shape of a tortoise shell. You literally can’t miss it.
Be-lavie Tip: We were given some local insider knowledge that this spot can become very busy with photographers and those having carefully curated photo shoots. We visited at around 10 am on a cloudy slightly drizzly day in early June, to find we had the whole place to ourselves.
- Find it Here: Honeycomb Map Location.
**Where to get the shot** As the honeycomb naturally frames the skyline of the most iconic Chicago buildings, it’s a no brainer that this is the best angle. It’s also possible so sit inside the sections of the honeycomb for a much closer perspective.
North Avenue Beach
This has to be one of our favourite places to walk and also take in the most stunning skyline of Lake Michigan with the city scape behind it. You’ll see lots of walkers, cyclists and leisurely strollers here too.
Be-lavie Fact: Did you know Chicago has over 26 miles of beach? It surrounds lake Michigan and they even have beach clubs during the summer, close to Lincoln Park where you can sit on deck chairs and enjoy a beach vibe on the sandy shores.
Find it Here: North Avenue Map Location:
**Where to get the shot** Walk up to the curvature of the skyline, where there are a few benches and a stone / concrete wall. Its a great prop to walk along to have both the lake and downtown skyline in the back.
The London House Rooftop
One thing is for sure, no visit to Chicago is complete without a visit for a birdseye view of the city sights. We’re recommending London House Chicago: Curio Collection By Hilton’s Rooftop on the 21st & 22nd floor of the luxury London House Hotel. A fine mix of traditional and modern, be sure to book a spot on the rooftop for drinks in the evening or a spot of lunch. Evening views are stunning of the riverwalk and you’ll be sitting eye to eye with the Wrigley building.
Look out for the coppula on the roof terrace.
Be-lavie Tip: Reservations are an absolute must for the rooftop terrace and make sure you Stipulate you’d like to sit outside, in the warmer months, as the 21st floor rooftop bar is indoors and you won’t get a good view.
- Street Location: 85 East Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60601 I Reservations & Details.
- Find it Here: Map Location:
**Where to get the shot** Any where on the rooftop is perfect, towards the middle gives perfect aerial views of The Riverwalk and towards the right, you’ll see the Wrigley Building.
Other Chicago Sculptors
Chicago if beaming with sculptors which you’ll see as you walk around, here are a couple besides, The Bean and The Picasso we spotted.
The Constellation
Created by world-renowned Spanish-Swiss engineer adn Sculptor, Santiago Calatrava, ‘The Constellation stands around 29 feet tall just infront of the World Trade Centre Transportation Hub in River North, Chicago. It represents a red leaf spiral whose colour is meant to reflect and bounce light from the mirrored modern surrounding architecture.. It’s pretty striking in its design, shape and colour – so you won’t miss it!
- Street Address: Chicago, IL 60606
- Find it Here: Map Location
**Where to get the shot** Walk up the river elevated park sections which are right outside the World Trade Centre Transportation HUb Buildings. It’s best to step back a way to capture the whole height of the sculpture.
The Gentlemen Statues

- Time of Day – Always choose either sunrise or golden hour for the best time to take your photography.
- Alternative Angles – Always look and think about alternative perspectives of outdoor spots incase the weather doesn’t play ball.
- Reflect Personality – Try and individualise your photos with placement and personality so they are unique to you.
- Busy Time of Day – If you plan to shoot at sunset, just bear in mind the evenings can often be busy in Chicago with people heading out post work so plan accordingly.
