Restaurants Serving Vegetarian Food in Houston
Our round-up of the vegetarian-friendly restaurants and eateries we went to in Houston during our visit, with personal tips on recommendations and other useful information for your foodie guide.
Le Jardinier
Style: One Michelin Star
A dining concept created by Chef Akain Verzoreli and the Bastion Collection, hospitality group, Le Jardinier is a beautiful restaurant located in a section of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Chic and contemporary French-style cuisine in stunning surroundings and with excellent service. They were awarded their first Michelin star when the Michelin guide arrived in Texas in November 2024.
We loved the clean and seasonal Autumn menu, which of course changes witch different seasons to reflect the availability of produce.
Apart from the a la carte, the restaurant also has a Seasonal Tasting Menu of five courses which can be accompanied with wine pairing to complement each course.

Be-lavie Recommendation: There are a number of vegetarian options for each course but Le Jardinier is happy to adjust dishes to suit a vegetarian or vegan diet. Just let your server know that you are vegetarian when being seated. We’d recommend the Burrarat with figs, pomegranate kabocha squash, spiced poached apples, pumpkin seeds to start, followed by the Parisian Gnocchi with squash veloute, black pepper minus the lardons. For dessert the Valrhona dark chocolate with chocolate cremeux, white chocolate ice cream and caramel sabayon. Another great dessert option is the butterfly, which has a yuzu delicate mousse, raspberry compote, pistachio sablé. La Jardinier also does a wonderful range of cocktails.

Tiny Champions
Style: Inventive Italian (Mid-range)
Located in EaDo or east Downtown, Tiny Champions is a great chilled spot serving great inventive dishes of classic pizza and pasta. The menu here changes based upon season. They have a good vegetarian range of dishes which are really very good and well thought out. There is also quite a large selection of cocktails and wines to select from. Vegetarian dishes at thetime of our visit in Autumn 2024, included small plates like braised butter beans with charred pickled peppers, garlic toum, tourn croutons and dill as well as creamy risotto and a few well executed but homely desserts.
If you fancy something a little bit more upscale to this menu, head to their sister restaurant, Nancy’s Hustle, also located on the East Side of Houston. Tiny Champions gets very busy, yep even on weekdays so we’d advise booking.

Eden Plant Co (Plant + Coffee)
Style: Good Coffee surrounded by plants
Located in Houston’s former post office in Downtown Houston, aptly named POST. As well as having lovely range of plants at their open unit at Post Houston, they also have a coffee bar, with seating amongst the plants and foliage. So if you love coffee and plants, this is most definitely your spot!

Sunday Press at Hermann Park
Style: Friendly cafe setting in park
If you’re at Hermann Park, and in our opinion you really should visit, Sunday press is a good place to take a pit stop and refuel. It’s a small cafe with a picturesque location close to the lake adb Oblisque style monument. We’d recommend taking a seat outside but there is some indoor seating. Sunday Press serves simple delicious food like take-out salads, sandwiches, fries, baked good and sweet treats as well as hot and cold drinks. Most items are served in take-out containers so you can take a seat anywhere in the park.

Leeland House
Style: EaDo laid-back brunch place
A complete accidental find, yet one of the best finds of our trip. Leeland House is located in East Downtown (EaDo) and is a wonderful place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. It closes early afternoon but does a wonderful Southern American all-day bench menu, cocktails, speciality mimosas as well as a full espresso menu. Expect things like crispy cauliflower, truffle fries, brussel sprouts on their sharing boards as well as biscuit baskets, sandwiches, avocado toast, hash, salads and more. They have a great variety for vegetarians.
You grab a seat, pick from the menu and pay inside. The food is delivered to your table when it’s done.

The sweet potato hash is really good and contains sweet potato roasted sweet potatoes, spinach, cheddar, tomato, smashed avocado and eggs your way, plus house aioli. It’s also gluten-free!

Bars & Drinks Spots
Houston most certainly has a great variety of drinking holes including great cocktails, craft beers are non-alcoholic options too. Here are some we really enjoyed hanging out at.
Z on 23 rooftop Bar
Style: Downtown fancy rooftop bar
Located on the top of Le Méridien Houston Downtown, Z on 23 Rooftop has some stunning twinkling views of the City’s skyscraper skyline. The music is fantastic as is the atmosphere. You can’t receive so it’s literally first come first serve. On our visit there was Justin Garcia art installation up there which was pretty thought-provoking. This is the perfect spot for pre dinner drinks or a night cap. It gets livelier on the weekends.

8th Wonder Brewery
Style: Local tap room in EaDo
A really fun brewery tap room with covered in Astros baseball team memorabilia with a big outdoor backyard space that hosts live music events. The decor is super quirky and fun. Note they also do THC beers, which do contain the cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis that is the main psychoactive component of the plant. We gave this a miss though!
The music is really good here and note the Beatles statues in the backyard. Events here also see food truck and barbecues in the back yard.

Markets in Houston
There are many local markets in Houston, but as most visitors would opt to stay in Downtown, we’ve included our favourite.
Market Square Farmers Market
As a visitor, you’ll probably be based in the downtown part of Houston and each Saturday sees a farmer’s market in Market Square. Farmer’s and traders from the outskirts of the city set up stalls here selling mainly food products such as Artisan cheese, meats, coffee, juices as well as some gifts. There is always live music with bistro tables and chairs dotted around the green space so take a seat, grab some food and enjoy the entertainment. It’s completely family friendly too as there are fun activities for the kids to take part in! the markets are a great way to support small locla businesses.

Great Food Tours & Experiences in Houston
Here are some tours that we’d personally recommend you check out based on research from our own trip to Houston.
Top Tips for Vegetarian Food in Houston
- If there is an option to make reservations, do so. This will definitely be the case at fine dining and Michelin starred restaurants which have a limited number of tables and fill up fast. It’s best to book these weeks in advance in many cases as we found weekends and some week days were very busy. Houstonians like to eat out and they know their food.
- Email or call the restaurant ahead to find out the vegetarian options and if they can cater for you.you. Many restaurants are accommodating and will offer alternatives. Fine dining and Michelin starred establishments will have their chefs create a vegetarian version of the taster menu just for you.
- The dress code is generally casual in many restaurants in Houston. If you are heading for a Michelin Starred restaurant then it’s wise to dress up a little. A smart dress for the ladies and a shirt and trousers for gents. No flip flops or beach wear style of clothing.
- If you’re a foodie, we’d recommend booking a mix of restaurants for your time in Houston. Maybe one fine dining or Michelin starred with casual dining, a place where the locals hang, cafes and heading to markets and delis to pick up fresh picnic items.
- Brunch is a big thing in Houston and many restaurants will be running a brunch menu every Saturday and Sunday. It’s often a set price and includes lots of food coupled with quite a fee bottomless drinks, especially Mimosas and other cocktails. Pace yourself!
Vegetarian Food in Houston FAQ
If you still have some unanswered questions, then hopefully these may bridge the gap or feel free to ask in the comments at the end of this article.
What is the most vegetarian friendly food in Houston?
There is so much you can eat including fresh salads, fruit, bread, cheese sharing boards, burgers, pizza, tacos, tortillas, salsa, vegetable patties, South Indian restaurants (located in the subhurbs like Hillcroft Park Center such as the well known, Shri Balaji Bhavan) it’s actually quite similar to the UK, but you do need to do some research of you’re looking for dedicated vegetarian restaurants. We found that there are lots of varieties of Mexican-influence foods that are great too.
What is the Gratuities Culture in Houston?
Unlike Europe and many parts of the world, tipping is a big thing in the USA and Houston is no exception. In som places service is added on and a tip is expected. If the food and service is good, we would typically tip 20%. This is because waiting staff are paid so poorly in the USA and tips are used to pad out their salaries. If the service is not up to scratch then it’s completely up to you if you want to pay. Unfortunately the tipping culture in the states can add on quite a bit to your travel budget!
Is it Expensive to Eat Out in Houston?
Eating in Houston can be as expensive or as value for money as you would like it to be. There are many Michelin starred restaurants as well as other fine dining spots, These will of course be of at a premium cost due to the nature of the menu, service and atmosphere.
Cafes are of an average price as they are in the UK as are bakeries. A great lunchtime option is to buy a variety of items from local market stalls and have a picnic. Or head to supermarkets. This will keep costs down and you can enjoy a nice dinner. We’d recommend heading to some of the more local restaurants that are not located right in Downtown but more off into the side areas. Montrose in a good lcoation.
What is the dress-code of Houston Restaurants?
The majority of places are very casual, so dressing down is completely fine. However if you are heading to a fine dining please, we’d recommend maybe smart trousers, a shirt and shoes for men and a nice dress, sandals or shoes for the lasy. No ned for cocktail dresses. However if you. like dressing up then feel free to go all out but only at the high end spots!
What Is The Best Place To eat in Houston
In our opinion, if you love cool, hip places which are laid-back and make traditional yet delicious food with a wonderful local ambience, head to East Downtown. It may look uo and coming , thats’ because it is! A lot of the cool sister restaurants of the same owners are opening more casual spots here like Tiny Champions.
Vegetarian Food in Houston Round-Up
We hope this article has provided some inspiration around where to get vegetarian food in Houston and that the city most definitely has a great range of foods eaten by visitors and locals alike. With the rise of people wanting to follow a vegetarian diet in the city, especially Millenials it’s safe to say, that dedicated Vegetarian restaurants have popped up and existing eateries are leaning towards having more options to accommodate vegetarians and vegans. We wrer actually surprised with the array of Houston restauranst that accommodate vegetarians after hearing about how meat-heavy the diets are.
We of course have only captured a snapshot of restaurants, cafes and bars in the city in this article, but our advice is always, call in ahead and confirm what vegetarian-friendly options are available and secondly if you like a spot of adventure, take the advice of locals. They are always really happy to help and we actually got some of our suggestions from them to. They will know of the places with the best seasonal ingredients.
