Sister Act: The Musical
The stage production of Sister Act brings a new angle on the 1992 film, starring Hollywood sensation, Whoopie Goldberg as a 1970’s club singer trying to get her big break in the showbiz world. After witnessing a murder she winds up in witness protection and joins the sisterhood posing as a visiting nun.
The entire cast delivers incredible performances, the leads were delivered effortlessly by local lady, Sandra Marvin (Emmerdale and Waitress star) taking the lead as Delores Van Cartier, Lesley Joseph, playing Mother Superior (TV (most famous for Birds of a Feather, and West End legend) and West End and Hairspray favourite, Lizzie Bea, starring as Sister Mary Robert.
The stage musical, produced by Whoopie Goldberg differs from the movie, but fear not, there is no room for your disappointment in the slightest. The show and lead role has been reinvented for the stage and it works seamlessly providing hair-raising vocals, beautifully timed comedy instances and Sandra Marvin definitely makes Delores her own.
Notable Performances
Notable performances come from Joseph supplying perfectly executed comedic lines, Bea, who’s performance of ‘The Life I never Led’ was highly charged and emotional, Graham Macduff performance as Steady Eddie and ‘I could Be That Guy’ plays out his love for Delores sincerely. Each member of the cast delivers a stellar performance but as a group on stage the performance is simply elevated and pure magic.
Highlights
Highlights include the scenes where the Deloris helps her fellow sisters choir discover their true voices as individuals with each bringing a unique tone to the choir collectively. In the process Deloris also discovers her own voice and where her true passion lies.
Staging
The stage design is in keeping with the surroundings and adds to the whole ambience with gothic pillars and ecclesiastical window arches. Simple and effective brought alive by the colours and tones of the light design by Tim Mitchell and sound design by Tom Marshall, which gives the feeling of being at a colourful gospel concert on occasions. The whole stage lights up and beams energy, which will have you on your feet clapping or tapping along to the gospel-style choir ensemble.
Sister Act: Closing Words
There is no doubt thought that leading lady Sandra Marvin, has worked the role of Deloris as her own defining the character of Deloris through her vocals and quick punch lines. Singing ‘Fabulous Baby’ and leading on ‘Take Me To Heaven’ with the sisters were definite goosebump moments and look forward to the finale!
Sister Act is one divine act that’s going to be hard to follow. It’ll bring you joy in bundles, feel good vibes and of course all the laughter you’ll need as you’re transported to the order in the contrasted convent and gangster-streets of 1970’s Philadelphia.
