The History Of The Gaslamp Quarter

This area was once San Diego’s first port and had many American sailors docking from the East Coast. Unfortunately in those days the district is said to have been full of gambling houses, brothels, opium houses and was even known as the biggest red light areas in the west of the United States. If by any chance you fancy learning about the shady history behind the neighbourhood, take a Gaslamp Quarter walking tour or head to the Gaslamp Museum at the David-Horton House. 

A lot has changed since then of course! The Gaslamp Quarter got its name from the gas lamps that lined the streets of the area back in the late 1800’s. The area was originally  known as New Town in the nineteenth century and was the epicentre of the business district as well as entertainment venues.

In 1867, gas lamps were added to line the streets, to provide pedestrians as well as horse drawn carriages light, which is how the area became so fondly known as The Gaslamp District. The years preceding, led neighbourhood to undergo a few phases of decline as well as regeneration, with some of the original gas lamps being taken away and replaced. 

The 1980s saw a major restoration to the district which prioritised preserving the historic buildings of the Gaslamp Quarter. The gas lamps are now lit by arc lights, as opposed to the original gas lamps.

Where is The Gaslamp Quarter Located?

The 16 and a half block district located in the downtown area of San Diego, California runs from Broadway to Harbor Drive and from 4th to 6th Avenue.

The neighbourhood is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places as the Gaslamp Quarter Historic District, the area has well over 90 historic buildings, which you can see when walking around the area. Many of the buildings date back to the Victorian times and are today home to shops, restaurants, hotels as well as entertainment venues.

How To Get To The Gaslamp Quarter?

The distance between San Diego Airport and Gaslamp Quarter is four miles. There are a number of options available:

• Car – It’s possible to hire a rental car from San Diego Airport. It should take approximately 10-12 minutes to arrive in the Gaslamp Quarter via Harbor Drive. Use google maps to ascertain directions straight to your accommodation.
• Taxi – This is the  fastest way to get from San Diego Airport to Gaslamp Quarter and takes five mins. It costs the equivalent of  £13 – £16.
• Bus – This is the  cheapest way to get from San Diego Airport to Gaslamp Quarter. The bus is  line 992 bus via Broadway & Front Street. Its costs the equivalent of £2 – £4 and takes 28 min. The bus is operated by San Diego Metro Transit and departs from San Diego International Airport & Terminal 1 station.

Things To Do In The Gaslamp Quarter

One of the best ways to see The Gaslamp Quarter is by walking. You can by all means do a self-guided walking tour with maps that may be recommended by your hotels but there is nothing that beats having a local guide whose experience and insider knowledge is priceless. This two hours Gaslamp Quarter Walking Tour, is one of the best and looks back to the early days of San Diego. Once known as “The Stingaree,” (after the sting rays in the bay) the town didn’t start out in the most positive of lights!.

The Gaslamp Quarter Archway

Designed in 1986 by Harmon Nelson, the six ton structure was put up and completed in 1991.

It’s meant to be a symbolic as a declaration that the City of San Diego was committed to continuing the redevelopment of Downtown, while also serving as an icon for other cities to look to the Gaslamp Quarter as an example of successful redevelopment.

The archway structure uses neon, incandescent, and fluorescent light fixtures that look beautiful during the night.

During 2012 and 2013, the archway underwent painting and some structural repair, with the exchange to more efficient and durable neon lighting.  Although it is the entrance archway to the Gaslamp quarter, only tourists and visitors call it this, the locals refer to the neighbourhood as ‘The Gaslamp”

The Davis Horton House Museum

The Gaslamp Quarter is steeped in a deep history and for culture vultures there is no better way to learn of its past than by visiting the Davis Horton House Museum. The actual museum building dates back to 1850 and is recognised as the oldest standing residence in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The museum is full of original furnishings and historical artefacts and exhibits, that give visitors a comprehensive understanding of the different regions and dwellers through the times. The Museum includes narratives about the people who lived in the house, such as Alonzo Horton (‘Father of the New San Diego’) to soldiers, gamblers and many others.

You can even take guided tours, that provide a greater insight as the guides are very knowledgeable and captivating with their tales of the haunted history of the house.

TOP SPOOKY WALKING TOUR RECOMMENDATION

San Diego Chinese Historic Museum

Located in San Diego’s small Chinatown area and built in 1927, this building started life as a Chinese mission and was saved from demolition in the 1980s by the Chinese Historical Society of Greater San Diego and Baja California.

If you have teh time we’d definitely sugges a visit although it’s only open at the weekends from 12:00-16:00 with $8 entry fee. It’ll take around 90 minutes or less to walk through the exhibits in a leisurely fashion.

There are literally housands of ethnographic artifacts housed here and the gallery charts the history of San Diego’s historic Chinatown, including display models of early Chinese American settlements, artifacts excavated from old Chinatown, and equipment salvaged from former local businesses.

The museum often hosts educational talks and small shows, whihc if you’re lucky you may be able to attedn alongside your visit.

Spreckles Theatre

Often referred to as ‘the first modern commercial playhouse west of the Mississippi’ and designed by John D Spreckles, it was built in 1912 to commemorate the opening of the Panama canal. 

It once saw performers like Charlie Chaplin and Judy Garland grace it’s stage and is quite beautiful inside. Unfortunately since being sold to real estate in 2021, it is now closed but with plans to renovate the building. You can still walk up to it and take photos and it is often a stop on many walking tours in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The US Grant House Hotel

This hotel should be marked as a spot of interest on any self guided walking tour of the Gaslamp Quarter. It is one of the historic and oldest hotels in the area and now operates under a franchise of the Marriott International, of their Luxury Collection branding. It is also listed on the ‘National Register of Historic Places. The hotel is 11 stories high and has around 270 guest rooms as well as multiple ballrooms. 

The hotel opened originally in 1910 and named after President Ulysses Grant. It is thought that San Diego voters helped finance $700,000 for the $1.5 million needed to construct the hotel after Grant didn’t have sufficient funds.

Balboa Theater

Originally opening in 1926, this theatre showed a host of movies as well as pantomime style shows but over the following decades, it was saved by a group of advocates from being demolished. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The design of the theatre incorporates Moorish and Spanish styles and we would advise stopping  by for a photo opportunity!

The Old Spaghetti Factory

Dating back to 1898, this Buel town building was designed by architect, Irving Gill known for his modern style of architecture back in the days. 

The arched corner entrance, bay window, and cobbled brick cornice, this building reflects the originality of the architects Hebbard and Gill. After housing Western Metal Company and Buel Town Chemicals, the building was converted for use as The Old Spaghetti Factory Restaurant in 1974.

The Horton Grand Hotel

Another registered National Historic Landmark, The Horton Grand Hotel has an ornate Italian character, Victorian facade based on the Innsbruck Inn in Vienna, Austria.

The historic boutique hotel that stands here now is made up of two modern restored historic buildings being the Grand Horton, built in 1887 and the Brooklyn Kahle Saddlery.

We stayed here a few years ago, and discovered that Room 309 is supposedly haunted by the ghost of Roger Whitaker, a gambler who was shot dead by a man he cheated in a game of poker. Guests who have stayed in Room 309 have given accounts of things moving whilst they are asleep.

The Louis Bank of Commerce

Known in the area as the Jewel of the Gaslamp, with its twin rising towers, dating back to 1888, this is San Diego’s first granite building pre-built on the East coast. It’s a lovely reminder of the Baroque Revival Architecture and this four storey building housed the Bank of Commerce up until 1883. The upper floors were once the Golden Poppy Hotel, which was a notorious brothel run by Madame Cora and her ‘colourful marble holding ladies’.

It’s worth stopping by and checking out the architecture style despite its shady history!

The Yuma Building

Built in 1869 by Captain Alfred Henry Wilcox, this was one of downtown San Diego’s first brick buildings. It was originally constructed as a one story building and latter added to. Following the death of Captain Wilcox, it was named after his pioneering transport along Colorado River to supply Fort Yuma.

Along with the The Louis Bank of Commerce the Yuma Building was closed during an attempt to close the red light district in 1912. These two buildings are also known to be the most photographed in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Today the Yuma Building is a used for retail on the ground floor with the second and third floor being a private townhouse residence.

The San Diego Padres at Petco Park

When in San Diego, check out the home of the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on the border of East Village and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Petco Park has breathtaking views of San Diego. Architecturally magnificent, it represents celebrating the sea, the sky, the natural beauty, cultural diversity and a ‘unique spirit’ of San diego.

The atmosphere is wonderful on game days and it has a real friendly and family orientated vibe. The best thing is that they have seating options to suit every budget from private boxes, mid range as well as adjoining grass hillocks with screens so you can still be apart of the electric atmosphere. 

If you can ‘t make a game, and are a baseball fan,  it is still possible to take a tour of the park with an in house guide to allow you to go behind the scenes of the park.

Gaslamp Artisan Market 

This is a great way to support local small businesses and artisan producers. The market consists of over 70 vendors selling a range of things such as clothing, homeware, arts, photography, food as well as plants and lots more.

The outdoor market takes place every Saturday & Sunday from 10:00-16:00 between Market and Island Avenues. Parts of these streets are closed off to allow pedestrians to walk freely through the stalls, during market hours. 

Be-lavie Tip: This market is a very local experience and you’ll see many of the San Diego residents mooching through the vendors. Great experience for visitors.

USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway was the longest serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century. Named after the climactic Battle of Midway of June 1942, It was built in only 17 months and was commissioned on Sept. 10, 1945. Midway was the first in a three ship class of large vessels that featured an armoured flight deck and a fleet of 120 planes.

Going to see the USS Midway is one of the most popular things to do close to the Gaslamp District. It’s actually situated in the Embarcadero which is a few minutes from the Gaslamp. Visitors can walk around certain parts of the vessel as well as using their flight simulator to experience what it would be like flying some of the aircraft that were aboard the ship.

Street Murals

You’ll see many murals around San Diego, but this ‘Smile you’re in San Diego is one that was commissioned by the San Diego Tourism Authority. The signature work was created by Pandr Design Co, (artists Roxy Prima and Phoebe Cornog) in 2018. 

It is also a popular selfie location. In the words of the artists, “The vibrant, colorful backdrop works for anyone who poses next to it.” They add: “And really, with the gorgeous San Diego weather being what it is, how could we keep from smiling?”

Although this isn’t exactly in the Gaslamp, It is just on the outskirts and we wanted to include it as it’s such a welcoming one to the city.

Where To Eat & Drink In The Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter and Downtown San Diego has the best range of restaurants and bars in San Diego which we are sure will suit all tastes and budgets.

Coffee & Breakfast 

Tiger Cafe, Gaslamp 

Located in San Diego’s Gaslamp District, we visited this cafe when it had just opened. They had a wonderful selection of hot and cold drinks but now are offering a wider selection. They even have some great looking pastries, breakfast bowls, waffles, sandwiches and more.

Tiger Cafe is also the perfect spot to sit, and watch the scenes in the Gaslamp district unfold through the large windows. The decor is minimal in tones of sage and white and note the multi-colour tiger on the wall that was being painted when we stopped by.

Be-lavie Recommendations: Try their iced coffees, we particularly love the French vanilla iced latte. We also enjoyed their quick grab and go Market breakfast bagels, with an omelette, cheese and avocado accompanies by a bowl of fresh seasonal fruit.

Chiefy Cafe, Gaslamp 

A great coffee shop in San Diego with two locations, one in the Gaslamp district and the other at San Diego University. This coffee hangout has a very fun vibe and is perfect for anytime drinks, breakfast and lunch. They do a selection of vegan coffees and grab and go breakfast.

The do a number of house blends, stronger blends including Ethiopia and Guatemalan coffees as well as a whole vegan friendly drinks menu, which is pretty impressive.

They also do an interesting rage of lattes such as Moon milk, Viennese, Mexicano and Oreo Remix. A few of their breakfast highlights include, avocado toast, acai or dragonfruit bowls and bagels.

Gran Havana Cigars & Hookah Lounge, Gaslamp

Technically this isn’t a coffee shop but they do fantastic coffee based drinks as well as pastries. Gran Havana actually specialises in an extensive range of Cuban hand rolled cigars and even have a specific glass cabinet room where these are stored and rolled. The set up is very much like a lounge with comfy seating. It’s quite a cool place with mysterious decor, and more so in the late afternoons and evenings Hookah is available here. 

As well as a range of iced and hot drinks, they also serve gelatos, crepes, pastries and other sweet treats.

Lani Coffee, Gaslamp

This Hawaiian cafe in the Gaslamp District not only serves some great Kona coffee which has been sustainably grown on the lava rich soils of Hawaii, they also do some great food.

We love their range of Acai bowls, blended iced drinks as well as pastries, crepes, espresso drinks and cold brew Hawaiian coffee. 

Lani coffee is a fun place decorated with traditional Hawaiian decor and artwork, it’s very popular with the locals too.

Broken Yolk, Gaslamp

In the historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Broken Yolk brings breakfast and brunch to the next level with largish portions of all the favourite breakfast dishes you can possibly think of! Their Tiki Toast lends some island flair to a syrupy breakfast staple, and my personal favourite, their endless omelette selection is impressive. You can be sure to set yourself up for the day at Broken Yolk.

Be-lavie Recommendations: the ‘Mom’ Omelette is delicious and includes, spinach, mushrooms, onion, red and green bell pepper, avocado and is drizzled with salsa and comes with some sour cream on the side. Omelettes come accompanied with a small bowl of fruit, blueberry muffin. They also do some great coffee and juice options.

Gaslamp Breakfast Company

Situated right in the heart of the Gaslamp district, this eatery is dedicated to offering the best in a breakfast plus cocktails, a selection of drinks as well as kombucha and beers. 

The vibe is casual and relaxed but with some fun splashes of colour in the form of artwork on the brick walls, and neon fun signs. The service is very attentive and friendly.

The Gaslamp Breakfast company has an extensive menu ranging from breakfast sandwiches to Mexican specialities, pancakes, waffles, fruit bowls, omelettes, French toast and even sides. They also do some great vegan sammies (sandwiches on sourdough) as well as a Vegan eggs Benedict.

This outlet will most certainly set you up for the day ahead!

Be-lavie Recommendations: A healthy favourite of ours is the yoghurt bowl with seasonal fruit, berries, banana and house made granola. Wash it down with a freshly squeezed orange juice and a latte for the caffeine fix. The Vegan Breakfast Sammie which is jam packed with a mix of plat=based eggs soy chorizio, avocado, tomato jam on sourdough served with house potatoes.

Parfait Paris, Gaslamp District

Inspired by centuries of French culinary heritage, Parfait Paris we’ve heard is a local favourite, earning awards like Best Bakery, Best French Restaurant, Best Brunch, and Best Dessert. The bakery’s mission is to share authentic French pastries and desserts with the San Diego community. Their creations are made with the finest ingredients and traditional French techniques, resulting in plates that are both beautiful and exquisite.

We had a simple breakfast there one morning and it was a perfect calm spot to try some of their traditional confectionery products like the classic melt in the mouth crepe which can have a number of sweet adn savoury fillings but in my humble opinion, lemon adn sugar will always be elite! Oh and you can also have it with a side of cream! C’est magnifique!

The Mission, East Village

The Mission concept specialises in simple, healthy, tasty food with artful presentation at an affordable price. They focus on using simple and fresh ingredients served from 07:00-14:00 daily. They have. acouple of locations around Sa Diego, and we love the set-up in East Village, around a 10 minute walk from the Gaslamp District.

The decor is light and airy in a wooden two storey building with an outdoor verandah with high ceiling and dark wood furniture inside. The walls feature local artwork and

The menu, includes everything from classic pancakes, sandwiches to modern, Mexican specialities, American breakfast as well as sweet treats. We foun d the portions to be pretty large so consider sharing if in doubt-you can always order more later is our advice!

Be-lavie Recommendations: We fancied a sweeter breakfast so opted for a Mexican Mocha with chocolate, espresso & whipped cream. The house-made cinnamon toast included three slices of cinnamon swirl bread fresh blueberries, strawberries, powdered sugar and maple syrup.

Lunch & Dinner

Provisional Kitchen, Gaslamp  District

One of the most beautiful restaurants you will eat in in San Diego. Designed as a collaboration with Raan and Lindsay Parton from LA’s innovative retail concept, Alchemy Works, Provisional is a restaurant marketplace hybrid featuring seasonal fare and gourmet takeaway options.

The lunch menu features a selection of Italian specialities and courses with an open kitchen, The checkered floors are beautiful as are the high ceilings. The dining area features a Vittoria Coffee espresso bar. The open kitchen adds to the atmosphere and is a real feature of the restaurant.

The service is excellent here and the food is beautiful and fancy. Not just your usual Italian, very refined looking and beautifully plated. It’s a feast for the eyes just as much for the belly!

In 2026, Provisional made the decision to cease evening service and concentrate on lunch, brunch and breakfast service only but the food is just as good and if you’re staying at The Pendry, then you should have breakfast here at least once we’d think!

Be-lavie Recommendations: For a chilled evening, sip on a bottle of Chianti with Meyer Lemon Ricotta with California Honey, Chili Oil, Lemon Oil, Fennel Pollen, House-Made Focaccia. For mains order the Margherita Pizzetta made from a six year aged house made starter topped with Mozzarella, Fresh Basil, Bianco DiNapoli Tomato Sauce. End with a Tiramisu or Affogato.

Havana 1920, Gaslamp District

The atmosphere at Havana 1920 has to be one of my favourites in the Gaslamp District. There aim to bring Hemingway’s Cuba to life with authentic Cuban dishes, drinks and entertainment. Th elive music is fantastic and although a oredominantly meat menu, they can prepare vegan and vegetarian friendly dishes upon request. Prepare to dance the night aay, especially when the live music takes over!

TOP BARRIO LOGAN WALKING TOUR RECOMMENDATION

Be-lavie Recommendations: Start with some tortilla chips accompnaied by spicy dips. The Cuban Espresso Martini (Havana 1920 Rum, Havana 1920 cold brew, almond orgeat, R&D Sarsaparilla bitters) and Hotel Nacionale (Havana 1920 Rum, fresh pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, apricot liqueur, R&D Aromatic #7 bitters) with a plate of the Empanada Vegetariana filled which are inspired by their Greek sister restaurant, Meze. Savoury pastry filled with spinach, mint, dill, onions, mushrooms, & feta cheese.

Hasta Mañana Cantina, Gaslamp District

A great setting on Fifth Avenue serving fantastic quality Mexican dishes, with a small but perfect menu. The venue is decorated in colourful Mexican murals, lit up backdrops, a bar in the centre and booths for more intimate meals. They also have quite a large terace at the front. Hasta Mañana Cantina make some fab Mexican inspired cocktails na dwe found the hospitality and attention to detail really good here. The staff were super helpful with suggesting dishes and portion sizes adn were havppy to check with teh chef, what unfamiliar ingrediemts were used in certain dishes.

Be-lavie Recommendations: We started with the Chilli Mango Margarita (Serrano chilli infused patron reposado, trquila, mango, lime, chamoy) and Hibiscus Mezcal Margarita (with Mezcal, hibiscus, lemon, agave, chilli). To start we shared the Quesp dip with chips then followed with a main of mushroom street tacos with guacamole, coriander, onion and corn tortillas.

Mimoza Mediterranean, Gaslamp District

We loved this vibrant light restaurant in the heart of teh Gaslamp District withe beautiful table dressing and wall art as well as the pretty yellow roses in cute vases!

Mimoza is a Mediterranean restaurant bringing all the flavours of Greece and Turkey. Think lots of Meze, Borek, tasty salads and more. They also do a range of beautiful cocktails with a little ‘show’

This women owned business is led by a mother – daughter duo, and the yellow roses represents the symbol for International Women’s Day since 1946. 

The hospitality is fantastic, we found Mimoza to have a very homely vibe with the staff suggesting dishes based on our preferences. They also have a fantastic range of vegetarian and vegan dishes. The atmosphere is also really cool, espeically when it gets busy and you can hear the chorus of lots of different conversations happening all around you!.

Be-lavie Recommendations: Take a pew at the bar and start off with a couple of cocktails as we did. The Pistacchio Espresso Martini and the Cherie Amour are great choices. The Mimoza Mixed Appetizer (including selection of hummus, lebni, eggplant with tomato sauce, babaganoush, and ezme) is a great sharing option between two, plus the Spinach & Feta Cheese Borek, made up of thin flakey dough layered with spinach and feta cheese is delicious. End your meal with a slice of Baklava to share with

Rustic Root, Gaslamp 

Specialising in New American comfort food, Rustic Roots creates classic dishes rooted in tradition as well as incorporating regional dishes from around the US. Their aim is to use local ingredients that are sourced fresh to prepare classic recipes with a touch of modern flair.

The food menu includes, appetizers, salads and pastas and is quite small but perfectly formed. The decor is pretty cool. We visited during the autumn months and they had decked the placed out in seasonal leaves, pumpkins and lovely changing foliage.

Upstairs is more of a rooftop vibe with views over Fifth Avenue, whereas downstairs its more of a restaurant with booth kind of environment. We sat upstairs for the views. Take note if you do want a table with the rooftop views then there is a minimum spend so it’s a great idea to come with friends. They also have cosy heaters and you can order all the same dishes from the menu whether you decide to be seated downstairs or upstairs. It may be a little more noisier upstairs, especially at weekends.

Romanissimo Cucina Italiana, Gaslamp District

This is authentic Roman cooking in San Diego. Romanissimo features fresh handmade pasta, signature pizas, and bold Roman-inspired flavours with great Italian wines and cocktails to complement your dining choices. We thought Romanissimo offers an elevated dining experience with really attentive service and great suggestions of dishes. They’re also happy to let you have a little taster before you go right in and order. We particularly enjoyed the lively atmosphere and chatting, just as you would in a restaurant like this in Italy. The weekends are really busy with family bookings as well as couples, so it’s a good idea to book in advance.

Be-lavie Recommendations: We had a glass of Chianto Classico and a Giardino Spritz (Vodka, Elderflower Liqueur, Green Chartreuse,Basil Syrup, Lemon, Prosecco). We then shared a Melanzane e Burrata (roasted eggplant topped with fresh burrata then shared a main and pesto sauce) and then shared a main of Pizza Margherita topped with
fresh tomatoes sauce, mozzarella. Finally we ended with yep you guessed it, a desert to share – Tiramisu.

Bars

The Moxy Bar, Gaslamp/ East Village

This fun and cool brand brought to us by the Marriot group, have also have a fab bar. You can pop in for a drink  even if you’re not a guest. The cocktail menu is pretty small but they do beers, lagers and the like as well as a signature cocktail list.

At weekends you can sip with the DJ playing in the background. It’s a great spot to hangout with friends. 

Be-lavie Tip: Room 56 is the Moxy’s eclectic cocktail bar concealed behind a mystery bookcase just off the main lobby. It’s described as an intimate world of curated cocktails, with a dimly lit ambiance, and an air of secrecy. It’s a haven for those who seek the extraordinary, You must book a table here well in advance and it’s only open on certain nights so check before heading over.

Fifth & Rose, Gaslamp

This beautiful classic cocktail bar is elegant and chic. The decor enhances the rich stone which stands out amidst a black and white palette with crimson details, while candles and fresh roses accent the tables.

Fifth & Rose is the perfect atmosphere for date nights and special evenings out, they also do some bar snacks to complement your carefully crafted drinks.

Salt & Whiskey, Gaslamp

This restaurant and bar is located on the ground floor of the historical, Horton Grand Hotel. We didn’t eat here however the menu does look very inviting. If you love whiskeys and hard to find scotch, then you have to have a drink at their uber sophisticated bar. The service is impeccable and you can accompany your tipple with some fancy bar snacks

Mission Brewing, East Village

This cool micro-brewery has miltiple site savross San Diego, housed in an 1894 building near Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres) featuring a tasting room & regular tours.

It’s possible to pop in and during opening hours (they’re closed on Mondays unless there’s a San Diego Padres Game) and offer a range of locally brewed beers, IPA’s, Ciders as well as fruit lemonades for those who prefer non-alcoholic options. We loved the chilled and cool vibes especially the design of the building and seating. Head upstairs to play a number of games while you sip like, darts or cornhole which we particularly enjoyed.

A wonderful way to discover more of the Gaslamp Quarter foodie scene is by taking a tour. Here we’ve suggested some of our favourites:

#1 Gaslamp Quarter Food & Drink Walking Tour – 2.5 hours long with a central meeting point in the neighbourhood. Highlights include, three restaurants and an ice cream parlour for tastings as well as a fascinating historical tour combined.

#2 History Tour Pub Crawl – Two hour duration focussing on San Diego brews and the best breweries and bars in the Gaslamp Quarter. You will also hear tales of conquistadors, bootleggers, aviation pioneers, and so much more.

#3 Gaslamp Quarter Food Tour – This tour lasts for three hours and incorporates five tastings, insider tips on the most authentic places to eat as well as behind the scenes kitchen access. It’s definitely the best bet for foodies!

Where To Stay In The Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Downtown area has the largest option of boutique hotels in San Diego and there literally is something to suit everybody. Here are three tier options.

We didn’t’ stay at all these hotels but have stayed at The Mixy and Horton Grand Hotel. We did throughly research the list below when looking for where to stay in San Diego. They were also recommended to us by friends who live in the city. The below is from our research.

The Moxy San Diego , Gaslamp/Downtown

Style: Good value/ Mid-Range

Part of the Marriott group, the Moxy San Diego is nestled in a prime location right in the heart of downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District.

Enter the hotel and be met by the bright and open lobby’s stylish design with features such as ‘Plug & Meet’, gathering areas equipped with ergonomic tan sofas and 56″ HDTVs, a state of the art video wall with helpful travel tools and Bar Moxy! The lobby is scattered with games like connect four and noughts and crosses as well as some board games. 

Take the stairs up to the industrial looking mezzanine floor which has more of an office vibe and is perfect for working around. The opposite side has a row of chairs which overlook Bar Moxy on the ground level. The bar is a central meeting point of the hotel and is busy most nights. There is also a DJ on the decs here during the weekend which provides a fun club type vibe. Oh and there’s a little hidden cocktail bar at the back behind some very clever hidden doors.

The cosy guest rooms come with comfy beds, 42’ TVs, with a high quality sound system and fast WIFI. Queen rooms are pretty spacious and come with a city view or internal courtyard view. All rooms have cool, fully tiled bathrooms with toiletries, and towels replenished daily and serviced every other day. Rooms also come with a steamer for your clothes. Spot the retro telephone artwork and desk in rooms.

Every morning complimentary tea and coffee is available near the bar/reception until 11:00am and breakfast can be ordered as per menu from the bar. The pancakes are a great shout!

Why we love this hotel: Guests can check in at the bar and receive free drink tokens. There’s a great range of house cocktails, beers and other beverages available. Guest rooms also have mini steamers, the hotel also has a communal ironing room. Note the small room accessories like the retro telephone, artwork and desks. The decor is cool, as are the neon signs and the very cool trendy vibe of the place, making Moxy a popular choice for all age ranges. A hotel that oozes quirky from the moment you step in.

The Pendry San Diego

Style: Luxury

One of Downtown San Diego’s most beautiful luxury hotels in terms of it’s spacious, light and airy rooms as well as impeccable service. The building is beautifully constructed to highlight remnants of its history and that of the historic Gaslamp district surroundings. 

Rooms and suites at The Pendry are appointed over 12 floors and are thoughtfully finished with floor to ceiling windows, and all the luxury amenities you’d ever need during  stay here. 

We had a king size comfortable bed with quality linen, a large writing desk for working plus  wardrobe including a safe for valuables, plenty of hangers and floor space to store baggage as well as an iron and ironing board, which was welcomed as not all hotels go to this level of detail in the US. We were also pretty happy to see white fluffy bathrobes in the wardrobe which always come in hand when you want to visit the spa or pool.

With outdoor views the rooms also featured a blue and white chaise longue, perfect to relax in after a busy day of sight seeing.

The Pendry provides 2 large glass bottles of filtered water per room a day for guests cutting out the need for single use plastics. 

The room is split into the bathroom area with a huge glass shower cubicle in the centre with a rain shower and Pendry inhouse toiletries including shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The vanity area is large and has plenty of room to store personal wash bag item as well as fluffy towers and hairdryers plus more inhouse amenities.

The WC is a separate unit with the whole bathroom area being enclosed for privacy with sliding doors. 

Guests have the option to not have their rooms serviced daily by means of a hanging card on the door handle plus  enjoy the daily chocolates that house-keeping drop off each afternoon. Additionally guests can choose when they have their linens and towels changed to help conserve energy and water.

The food and drinks station included a fridge with extensively stocked mini bar and the unit top tray was filled with local snacks incase of the munchies, which are added to the room tab. The Nespresso machine comes with a number of pre filled coffee pods.

We opted for an entry level double room but it was impressively spacious 

Guests at the Pendry are granted priority access to it’s social club, Oxford. The hotel also has a large pool and spa on Level 3 with sun launchers, a bar and dining area plus a beautiful  living wal. The area is perfect for relaxing but does get pretty busy during the weekends and holidays. There is also a wellness spa and fitness centre on the same floor. 

Downstairs the lobby has a cosy yet stylish feel about it, with it’s fire and leather sofas in the entrance and railway waiting-room style seating.

The hotel also has some meeting rooms and a grand ballroom on the room above reception, plus quiet spaces which are great to work in if you want to leave your room for a change of scenery during a business stay. 

There are also some great restaurants on the ground floor such as Lion Fish (seafood spot), Provisional Kitchen which serves breakfast daily and brunch and lunch with an Italian-inspired menu. This has to be one of our favourite places to eat at the Pendry and when it comes to drinks, head to Fifth & Rose next door, where they knock up some great cocktails. 

Additionally at the either end of the hotel, keeping things a little casual, there’s a cool German-style beer hall perfect for local brews and sports watching. 

For those who would like something a little more fancy, Sabre Champagne & Wine Bar is known for its intimate atmosphere, focusing on bubbles, ranging from Cava and Prosecco to Grand Cru Champagne as well as some champagne-based cocktails.

The Pendry allows guests staying with them to hire out their Cadillac for a few hours per day on a first come-first-serve basis. We weren’t so confident in driving it around but upon check-in it’s best to reserve a date as soon as possible. The don’t provide  a chauffeur driven service so that’ s something to take into consideration if you’re not that familiar with the cars.

We love that the Pendry is making way for more sustainable focus within their brand little by little.

Quirky Hotel Features: Most definitely the architecture and redevelopment of the building, The decor is sleek, modern and minimalistics whilst oozing all the luxurious charm you’d want from an upmarket hotel without being stuffy. Also note the champagne vending machines in the hallway to Provisional where you can get mini bottles of Moet et Chandon.

Hotel Z: A Stay Pineapple Hotel

Style: Good Value 

Truly one of the best quirky boutique hotels in San Diego, Hotel Z’s exterior is painted in bright blue and yellow, with a bright sparkling pineapple – it’s hip, it’s cool and it’s popular for it’s good value and excellent service to match. Hotel Z is located in the most perfect location of the Gaslamp district and has free WIFI, bikes to hire for free, 24 hour front desk service, a dry cleaning service as well as a water bar to full up your bottles. 

Rooms are decorated in neutral whites with a flurry of Pineapple motifs scattered around the room. The pineapple branded yellow robes and slippers area welcome touch for the incredible value offered at Hotel Z.

We stayed in the hotel Stay Pineapple and loved the service, the cool vibes and excellent value for money. The service is truly commendable considering this is a hotel priced so so competitively.

Be-lavie Tip: Look out for the afternoon delights in the form of a cup of coffee and a couple of their pineapple shaped sugar cookies.

Quirky Hotel Features: Absolutely everything about this hotel is hideously cool and infectious. The bright exterior, the yellow bicycles, the robes, pets packages and of course those sugar cookies.

The Gaslamp Quarter is a great place to explore many of the points if interest in San Diego, Here are some of the places which are walkable from the neighbourhood or are a short Uber ride away. 

East Village 

Travel Time from Gaslamp Quarter: 12 mins. Walk or 4 mins drive.

East Village virtually neighbours Gaslmap Quarter and is pretty cool with great restaurants, bars, murals.East Village is San Diego’s largest downtown neighborhood encompassing 130 blocks, between Seventh Avenue to 17th Street. More than 700 businesses are located in the thriving urban enclave.

Things to do in East Village: 

• Spot Murals and Street Art
• Watch a Padres game at Petco Park. 
• Check out San Diego Central Library.
• Pay Mission Brewery a visit.
• You & Yours Gin Distilling Company for lovers of Gin.
• Have drinks at Nolen rooftop bar.
• Have a relaxing brunch at the eclectic, Invigatorium.

Seaport Village

Travel Time from Gaslamp Quarter: 15 mins, walk or 6 mins drive.

Seaport Village is a vibrant harbourside spot with stellar views of the San Diego skyline. There’s plenty to do here, stroll along the promenade, check out the art galleries, enjoy a meal at an upscale restaurant or do some shopping (local wines and souvenirs are good buys).

Embarcadero

Travel Time from Gaslamp Quarter: 20 mins, walk or 7 mins drive.

Embarcadero means ‘landing place’ in Spanish and you will see why it’s called that when you take a stroll down there! Downtown’s scenic Embarcadero is a perfect place to dine, shop, sightsee and play outdoors. Curling along San Diego Bay, the expansive waterfront area boasts a rich maritime history, eye catching public art, restaurants with incredible views, and lots of opportunities for fun on and along the water.

Visitors can explore popular maritime sites, shop in charming bayfront settings and tour around San Diego Bay while taking in U.S. Navy ships, aquatic wildlife and spectacular sites

Note the Embracing Peace statue of a sailor kissing a nurse by Seward Johnson and the National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military (both pictured below).

Things to do in Embarcadero

• Hit the outdoor boutiques.

Little Italy

Once home to San Diego’s flourishing tuna fishing industry and generations of Italian families who made their living on the sea, Little Italy is now a lively neighborhood with cozy patio cafés, international restaurants, craft brew stops, urban wineries, art galleries, sophisticated shops, boutique hotels, and the festive Piazza della Famiglia. We think your visit to San Diego should have a day factored in to spend in Little Italy.

Things to do in Little Italy 

• Head to the Saturday Farmer’s Market.
• Shop at the Little Italy Food Hall.
• Relax in Piazza delle Famiglia.
• Eat Pizza at Mamma Fillipi’s Grotto.
• Head to Architectural Vintage for reclaimed furniture.
• Visit Amici Park and grab some recipe rubbings.
• Get Gelato at Bobboi.
• Have dinner at Monello’s or Herb & wood.

North Park

Travel Time Gaslamp Quarter: 20-25 mins drive.

A cool arty and local community vibe with lots of eclectic stores, coffee shops and craft breweries. 

One of our favourite neighbourhoods to the north of San Diego with an eclectic and cool mix of arty and community vibes, Think unusual stores, musical theatre, coffee hangouts, craft breweries, laid back dining, street art and a very hip and colourful crowd.

The area between University Avenue and 30th Street is said to be ‘the best beer neighbourhood in the nation’ thanks to the locality of numerous craft beer outlets such as North Park  Brewing and Thorn Street. Beer. Craft cocktails are also quite popular. Our personal favourite is Seek Brewing who also have numerous food stalls just outside (independently owned from the brewery)!

Things to do in North Park

• Visit a craft brewery. 
• Check out the street art such as the ‘Welcome to San Diego’ sign.
• Enjoy coffee in one of the many cafes lining the main street.
• Head to the Farmer’s market on Thursdays.
• Window shop at places like Pigment and Ray Street where there are lots of boutique shops. 
• For some great foodie spots hit, City Tacos and tribute Pizza. 
• For interiors and great drinks plus a fancy space to work head to Lovesong Cafe.

Balboa Park

Travel Time from Gaslamp Quarter: 15 mins drive.

Balboa Park is home to the city’s best museums such as the San Diego Museum of Natural History, Comic con, Timken Art Museum, there are 10 in total to choose from. You can spend an entire day at the park as it has gardens, and open air performances as well as places to eat. It’s a culture lovers paradise plus its a wonderful open space with colonial Spanish style buildings.

If you love people watching, then this is the place for it. The Zoo is also situated here, however we did not visit due to our stance on captive wildlife. 

La Jolla

Travel Time from Gaslamp Quarter: 30 mins drive.

A dramatic coastline boasting incredible views, making La Jolla one of the most popular beach destinations in California. We usually spend one full day in La Jolla on our visits. Surrounded on three sides by the sea and backed by the steep slopes of Mount. Soledad, La Jolla’s natural beauty, abundance of activities and upscale village lifestyle ensure that it lives up to its nickname as “the jewel” of San Diego.

• Head to la Jolla Cove.
• Explore the Tide Pools.
• Spot the Pelicans, Sea Lions and Seals at the Cove.
• Go fro a coastal walk.
• Have brunch at the Cottage.

Travel Time from Gaslamp Quarter: 20 mins drive. Catching a ferry is fun and takes around 15 minutes from the Waterfront, about a 15-20 minute walk from Gaslamp.

Situated just across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado is consistently voted best beach in the U.S. by Dr. Beach. With gentle surf, sparkling wide sand beaches, charming main street and great hotels, including the famous Hotel del Coronado, this island paradise is perfect for a family vacation or romantic getaway. We recommend spending at least one day on Coronado Island.

• Segway Tour of the Gaslamp District – A 2 hour slow paced tout with a local guide, providing a great overview of te area heading along the waterfront, viewing the USS Midway (the longest commissioned ship in US Navy History), learn the history of the first city in California whilst getting a real feel for the Gaslamp Quarter.

If you’re planning to capture some lovely images in the Gaslamp Quarter, we’d recommend early morning or golden hour as a great time to avoid light bleaching. Many areas will be quieter in the morning but the area gets busy in the evening, so bare that in mind.
