Is Langkawi Vegan And Vegetarian-Friendly?

Today, Langkawi has a great range of vegan and Vegetarian food that is available on menus in general restaurants as well as dedicated Vegan and Vegetarian restaurants located around the island. Many of the restaurants located within resorts will have great quality as well as a range of dishes to suit diets that omit meat, fish and dairy.

Be-lavie Tip: There are fewer restaurants in the Northern parts of the island so you may have less choice of vegan and vegetarian food in Langkawi. The larger concentration of restaurants can be found in the South in Kuah. which is closer to the ferry terminal as well as Pantai Cenang which is pretty busy for nightlife and big tourist spot.

What to Expect to Pay in Langkawi For Food

Food is extremely good value for money in Langkawi, just like most of South East Asia and Malaysia. Even dining at five Star Luxury hotels is pretty cost effective compared to Europe, UK and the USA. In our suggestions of places to dine in Langkawi we’ve included the price of meals for two in Malaysian Ringgits,  Great British Pounds (£) as well as US Dollar ($). We’ve also added ‘great value, mid-range or high-end’ in terms of general Malaysian standards. MYR prices mentioned will likely fluctuate with exchange rates but are correct at the time of writing this article in January 2025.

Typical Malaysian Vegan and Vegetarian-friendly Foods

Although a lot of the typical national Malaysian dishes contain seafood and meat, it is possible to have vegan or vegetarian version of these. If you’re dining at a restaurant, let them know of your dietary requirements and they will happily make a vegan/vegetarian version if it’s possible by omitting not just the meat or fish components but also things like fish sauce. The food in Langkawi and a lot of Malaysia is a mixture of Chinese, Malay and Indian cuisines which is pretty reflective of the population that live here.

One things for sure though, Malaysians LOVE to eat! When they’re not smiling and being incredibly kind, you’ll see them tucking into food with Night Markets that are a local favourite on Langkawi.

Drinks in Langkawi

  • Teh Tarik – Often considered Malaysia’s national drink, Teh Tarik translates to ‘pulled tea’. It’s made from local black tea mixed with either condensed or evaporated milk with added sugar. The pulled tea part comes in when the tea is poured from a height from cup to cup to allow it to cool and create a frothy top. A little like the Indian tea you see made by chaiwallas.
  • Fresh Coconut water – refreshing and cooling in the high humidity, with the huge amount of palm trees in Langkawi, of course comes coconuts. You drink straight from the coconut itself and you’re even given a spoon to scoop out the flesh afterwards.
  • Sugar Cane Juice – For those who have a slight sweet tooth, this is perfect and watching it being made by a cruising machine is pretty interesting. It’s possible to add lemon or lime to take the slight sweet edge off too.
  • Fresh juices – With Malaysia being a predominantly Muslim country, alcohol is not readily drunk, it’s available at hotels and restaurants. But there is an abundance of fresh fruit, which means delicious squeezed juices are available.  One of our favourites is a pineapple, ginger, lime and orange juice. There is also a lot of Watermelon juice on offer.

Typical Vegan & Vegetarian Dishes in Langkawi

  • Vegetable Rendang – traditionally made with beef, the vegetarian version can be substituted with meatless chicken pieces, jackfruit or a medley of vegetables such as aubergines, carrot, cauliflower, peppers and onions. The Rendang sauce contains fresh lemongrass, lime leaves for a bit of a tang, ginger, chilli and finished with creamy coconut milk to balance the heart level.
  • Nasi Goreng – A type of fried rice which often has chicken in it along with vegetables, ask for the vegetarian version, and is characterised by the earthy taste from the caramelised kecap manis, a sweet soy sauce. It often contains shrimp paste but ask for this not to be added. It’s quite spicy too than just regular fried rice. Nasi means rice.
  • Nasi Lemak – often referred to as the national dish of Malaysia which generally ise served with anchovies and chicken but can be requested with vegetables only. The rice is cooked in coconut milk with lemongrass and other aromatic ingredients.
  • Nasi Dagang – Another Malaysian traditional dish where the rice is soaked and steamed a couple of times in coconut milk, giving it a creamy finish. It is served with pickled cucumber, fish curry and a sambhal, a curried vegetable soup. You can totally have it without the fish curry.
  • Roti Canai with Dhal (often called Roti Chanai) – An absolute favourite of ours for breakfast, is also known as roti paratha and is a crispy buttery Indian flatbread, that is flakey with soft layers inside. It’s actually interesting to watch how it’s made as it’s quite the art stretching the dough a little like a pizza on a hot plate. It is served with a dhaal curry made of lentils and spices. It is sometimes also served with a chicken curry.

  • Roti Jala – This Malaysian pancake looks a little like lace, with its batter being made up of flour, milk and turmeric giving it, its yellow colour. The batter is drizzled onto a hot plate or griddle pan in a net-like pattern and once cooked looks like a yellow lacey crepe. It’s served with a lentil curry, dhal.
  • Laksa – Made usually with chicken and prawns in a spicy broth containing noodles, most eateries can substitute with vegetables quite easily and is great if you love spicier food.
  • Mee Goreng – known as simply fried noodles. Mee is actually a type of noodle and adding the word ‘vegetable’ will mean you’ll have a delicious bowl of vegetable noodles with egg so vegans just say no egg!
  • Che Chong Fun – a mixture of flat rice noodles in a hoisin sauce sprinkled with sesame seeds and spring onions. The exception is that it comes cold and is quite a contrast to the usual warm noodles. Vegetarians and vegans ensure you request no fish sauce addition.
  • Rojack – a Malaysian style spicy sweet salad. A sweet and spicy sauce is made by combining, from hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sugar, chilli flakes, lime juice sambal or chilli sauce. This is mixed with fruit and vegetables such as pineapples, carrots, cucumber, mango and papaya and then all topped with a handful of chopped peanuts. Always check the outlet is not adding fish sauce though.
  • Popiah – Comparable to fresh spring rolls, popiah are a lot thinner than the rice paper version, stuffed with fresh cooked vegetables and tofu inside and occasionally with egg, ask for no egg if Vegan. They are often served cut up into smaller rolls, a little like sushi and are really tasty and perfect for a snack. You’ll find them at street  food stalls, particularly at night markets in Langkawi.

Style: Traditional flavours of Malay and Indian cuisine.

Translated to the ‘house of spices’ Gulai House has an exceptionally special location, it’s situated deep in the Datai’s rainforest and reached by buggy. The restaurant is housed in a traditional Malay kampung house design, with a floor seating area called a hersila. The menu can be paired with some great selections of wines too. Dine whilst listening to the sound of the rainforest wildlife at dusk.

Night Markets

These are a pretty big thing in Langkawi and the island has different locations daily. The night market in Kuah, where a few of our dining recommendations are such as Melior Cafe and Nian Cafe, usually takes place on Wednesday and Saturdays and start around 16:00 and go on until 22:00-23:00. They are an interesting place to try the local food but make sure that you do confirm regarding vegetarian and vegan as a lot of the stall sell meat and fish items.

Dining Tips For  Vegan & Vegetarian Food in Langkawi

  • Reservations – If there is an option to make a reservation, it’s advisable to do so, especially if you plan to visit a rooftop bar or restaurants within the hotels. Hotel guests often have priority to so its best to secure your table as soon as possible.
  • Fish Sauce & Eggs – Many dishes will be labelled in menus as saying plant-based, especially at restaurants that aren’t dedicated vegan spots therefore it’s best to confirm that fish sauce shouldn’t be added to your dish. Often fish sauce is overlooked as being non-vegetarian. The same goes for eggs if you’re vegan.
  • Call Ahead – If in doubt about a restaurant and if they serve vegan and vegetarian food, always call ahead many restaurants don’t have websites but have social media (Instagram and Facebook pages). Alternatively have your hotel concierge call and check for you.
  • Dress Code – The dress code at most restaurants and bars is pretty casual. However if you are heading to a fancy hotel for a meal or drink, ensure that you’re more smart casual. No flip flops or very revealing clothing. Remember that although the locals are pretty liberal, they are muslim and observing cultural appropriation is important.

If you’re hoping to head to the restaurants we’ve included in this guide. Then you’ll soon realise they are all spaced around the island and won’t all be within walking distance from your accommodation. We would therefore recommend either getting a taxi or downloading the Grab App. The popular platform in South East Asia, operates much like Uber and is safe and convenient as long as you have WiFI, many eateries are happy to give you the code. You can download Grab in the Apple or Google Play stores and add in your card details just like Uber.

How Much Do Grab Fares Cost On Average?

Travelling via Grab in Langkawi is really cost effective. A 20 minute journey cost us around MYR 22-25 (£5/$5). Often it was far less if we were getting a Grab back later in the evening after dinner if the restaurant was not within walking distance.

Vegan and Vegetarian Food In Langkawi FAQ

Is There A Tipping Culture In Langkawi?

Tips are not expected but are truly appreciated with the gratitude being extended so beautifully to the staff. If you enjoy the service and food we would suggest 10% of the total food bill which probably is easier left by cash.

Is It Pricey To Eat Out In Langkawi?

The honest answer is no. Compared to Western Countries such as Europe, The UK or USA the food and beverages are incredibly good value for money. We’ve added the price of meals for two under each of our dining suggestions above but two people can easily have a delicious meal with multiple courses and drinks for around £20/$25.

Can Alcohol be consumed in Langkawi?

Most locals are Muslim on the island and don’t therefore consume alcohol however most of the hotels and restaurants do serve alcoholic beverages. A few cafe don’t sell alcohol but you won’t miss it with the array of other delicious drinks available.

Do Most Restaurants Take Card Payment?

The majority of restaurants and all hotel restaurants especially do take most international credit cards. If you are eating at a street food market or very remote small restaurant cash is probably king.

Vegan and Vegetarian Food In Langkawi Round-Up

Langkawi’s focus on plant-based food has increased over the years with the rise of international tourism and the focus of wellness at many retreats and hotels. One of the wonderful things about the food on the island is that many of the traditional Malaysian dishes can be adapted to suit Vegan and vegetarian diets so you don’t have to miss out on the local flavours. We encourage visitors to be adventurous and try out the smaller eateries and discover the fusion of the cuisine of Chinese, Indian and Indonesian settlers and how their influence plays a part in Malaysian cuisine today.
